Description

The Department of Economic and Management (DEM) at University of Luxembourg is interested in hosting a postdoctoral fellow within the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship programme.

Please note that this opportunity is not a funded position (yet); it depends on

     1. The organization selecting you for continuing the process and

     2. A successful proposal written mostly by you (with some input from your host

organization in Luxembourg) and submitted before September 15th 2021

Project idea

Both EU and the USA announced Rare Earth Elements (REEs) as critical, since they are crucial for ‘green’ technology applications and demand is growing. However, the REE supply is currently monopolistically dominated by China, who owns and exploits the main world reserves. Furthermore, access to these resources is important for the delivery of the European Green Deal.

Thus the following research questions can be imposed:

  • What strategies can be applied to reduce the dependency of REEs on China?
  • Can a cartel among some small suppliers, such as, the USA, Australia, Japan etc. be formed and under what kinds of conditions?
  • What would be then the market and social consequences?
  • Furthermore, the recycle of REEs is very expensive at this moment, what would be the outcome from technology innovation?
  • And what would be the market and social outcomes of different ownership (China, USA, or EU) of the new technology?

Offer Requirements

The candidates should have a Ph.D in Economics, at least when the scholarship starts, with training in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Environmental Economics. The candidate should mainly work on theoretical and/or numerical economics.
