The PROFITH research group, PROmoting FITness and Health through Physical activity.

The PROFITH research group (no. CTS-977) is a young, enthusiastic and highly competitive group. Our overall goal is to advance the current scientific knowledge in a way that contributes to create a healthier society by means of examining the beneficial effects of physical activity on individuals’ health with and without disease and of any age.

Our main research lines/interests are:

  • Assessment of physical fitness
  • Assessment of physical activity and sleep
  • Epidemiology of physical activity and health
  • Exercise’s effects on brown adipose tissue, insulin resistance and obesity
  • Exercise’s effects on cognitive performance, academic achievement, and brain structure and function
  • Active commuting: methods, determinants and consequences

Clinical epidemiology to study the interaction between genes, physical activity, and features of the metabolic disorders. Full access to Multicentre-EU data bases with comprehensive genotype-phenotype information (see http://www.helenastudy.com). Access to an exercise-based RCT to analyse gene-exercise interaction on cardiometabolic risk factors, at brown adipose tissue (see http://profith.ugr.es/actibate?lang=en).
