Description
Call closing 12th September 2018
Brief description of the Research Group:
The Phylogenomics lab at the University of Vigo (http://darwin.uvigo.es ) is an internationally-recognized research group interested in the evolution of genes and genomes in populations and across the tree of life. Research in this group has been essentially cross-disciplinary, combining concepts and tools from biology, statistics and computer science. Its IP, David Posada (ORCID is 0000-0003-1407-3406), has been cited more than 49,000 times, being an ISI Highly Cited Researcher for the last 17 years, and has been awarded two European Research Council (ERC) grants to work on phylogenomics and cancer evolution.
Project description
Very recently, our lab has initiated a new but central research avenue in the field of cancer evolutionary genomics, financed by the European Research Council (ERC). The idea here is to leverage bulk and single-cell genomics to study tumor evolution in time and space.
Ultimately, we aim to construct a robust theoretical and methodological evolutionary framework that can contribute to a better understanding of the process of somatic evolution and shed light into the biology of cancer. For this we are obtaining multiregional tumor samples, from solid and liquid biposies, from collaborating hospitals, producing bulk and singlecell whole genomes from these, and developing and applying state-of-the-art statistical and computational techniques from phylogenetics, phylogeography and population genomics in order to understand tumor evolution patient by patient. We welcome any researcher interested in developing with us a research project in any aspect of tumor evolution, from the wet lab to the dry lab, at the ctDNA, CTC, single-cell or bulk level. We currently focus on chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and colorectal cancer (CRC), but we are open to work on any cancer type.
Research area:
Life Sciences (LIF)
The University of Vigo (UVigo) is a public Spanish university located in Galicia (Northwest Spain). It comprises 3 campuses, the main one in Vigo, and two more in Pontevedra (30 Km from Vigo) and Ourense (95 Km from Vigo).
Its activities are funded by the Spanish and Galician governments (structural and competitive funding) as well as through financing obtained from RDI activities (private contracts, collaborations with industry, patents, consultancy, etc.).
In the last years UVigo has enormously increased its scientific output and its capacity to obtain external resources, being listed in the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities in 2011 and 2012. In the last 10 years, UVigo has participated in more than 60 EU research projects totalling more than 25 million euros
