IS THE HOSTING RELATED TO A PROJECT WITHIN A RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE?Yes
Applications are invited for a Ph. D. student position at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste , Trieste, available as part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) SMART-X (https://www.smartx-itn.eu/) standing for Study of carrier transport in MAterials by time-Resolved specTroscopy with ultrashort soft X-ray light.
Description:
The project aims at applying recently developed nonlinear optics experimental techniques to investigate the dynamics of technological relevant materials. The successful candidate will have an enrolment for the doctoral degree at Universita’ degli studi di Trieste and will work in close contact with the personnel of the Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste facility. Being part of the research staff of one of the newest facility’s beamline, he/she will be integrated in an international environment and have the opportunity to make connections all over the world. In addition to the scientific work, the candidate will face multiple challenges ranging from the vacuum technologies to the software writing, making his/her profile valuable for high tech research companies.
Work topic:
The project concerns the experimental acquisition and full ab initio modeling of the transient grating signal from condensed matter. Year 1: The candidate is expected to identify materials of technological and scientific interest and to obtain it, within the SMART-X collaboration, in a form (thickness, roughness etc), suitable to perform TG experiments. First characterization of the material with standard Synchrotron techniques. Year 2: Transient grating experiment on the selected material. The candidate is expected to plan, prepare and realize the experiment on the selected material, in order to gain new and useful information for the technological deployment of the selected system. Moreover, during the second year, the candidate is expected to start a modelization of the system. Year 3: Full modeling of the experimental data. During the third year, the candidate is expected to model the obtained data through the use of ab initio codes, write and discuss the Ph.D. thesis and publish the work. At the end of the project the candidate will be an independent scientist able to work in large scale facility and to perform ab initio simulations of the complex experimental technique by its own.
Salary:
Total monthly remuneration cost Euro 3.413,88 (including salaries, social security contributions and other costs included in the remuneration under the employment contract or other direct cost). Monthly mobility allowance cost Euro 600,00. Depending on the researcher’s family situation at the recruitment date also a family allowance (Euro 250,00 / monthly cost) could be paid.
About Elettra:
Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste is a multidisciplinary international research center of excellence, specialized in generating high quality synchrotron and free-electron laser light and applying it in materials and life sciences. Its mission is to promote cultural, social and economic growth through basic and applied research and technology and know-how transfer. The main assets of the research centre are two advanced light sources, the electron storage ring Elettra and the free-electron laser (FEL) FERMI, continuously (H24) operated supplying light of the selected "colour" and quality to more than 30 experimental stations. These facilities enable the international community of researchers from academy and industry to characterize structure and function of matter with sensitivity down to molecular and atomic levels, to pattern and nanofabricate new structures and devices, and to develop new processes. Every year scientists and engineers from more than 50 different countries compete by submitting proposals to access and use time on these stations. These are selected by peer-reviewed by panels of international experts on the basis of scientific merit and potential impact, and the winners are granted valuable access time as a contribution to their research.
