Description

Dr. Serkan Kir’s laboratory is seeking a highly motivated post-doctoral candidate to apply for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Postdoctoral Fellowship to be conducted in Metabolism & Cancer Research Laboratory at Koç University, Istanbul, Turkey. Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in biology, molecular biology, genetics, or a relevant subject area. Having a prior experience in adipose or muscle metabolism is a plus. The applicants are expected to conduct research, write papers, and apply for funding to establish their independent research programs. Strong oral and written communication skills in English are a must.

Our research group is investigating molecular mechanisms underlying cachexia. Cachexia is a metabolic syndrome associated with excessive energy expenditure and loss of adipose and skeletal muscle tissues. It accompanies many chronic diseases including cancer and is an important risk factor for mortality.

Our group studies novel cachexia factors activating signaling pathways involved in tumor-driven muscle loss and adipose tissue browning. Along with molecular biology approaches and primary cell culture techniques, we also conduct in vivo studies using transgenic mice and tumor models to characterize signaling mechanisms and identify novel molecular targets for anti-cachexia therapy. Our research interests include

  • skeletal muscle atrophy,
  • adipose tissue browning,
  • circadian clock regulation,
  • exercise-induced muscle hypertrophy,
  • myoblast fusion
  • and myonuclear accretion
