MSCA- Postdoctoral Fellowship: The Imperial Villas and Palaces in the Roman period (1st-5th centuries AD)

The Pablo de Olavide University in Seville offers positions for researchers willing to implement a 2-3 years project based in Spain within the framework of the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska Curie postdoctoral fellowships programme (MSCA-PF-2021). All top candidates having the approval of a supervisor at UPO will have the possibility of receiving specialized training in writing a successful proposal for the next MSCA-PF call. You can apply if at the time of the call deadline for the submission of MSCA-PF proposals (September, 2021): 1) you are in the possession of a PhD and you have not obtained your PhD more than 8 years ago; 2) you comply with the mobility rule of the MSCA; 3) you choose the Pablo de Olavide University as your Host Institution. Brief description of the Centre / Research Group:

The Department of Archaeology of the Pablo de Olavide University, has assumed an extraordinarily growing in research in the last 15 years thanks to several research projects lead by Prof Dr Rafael Hidalgo Prieto, which have been granted in regional programs (PAI HUM639, Andalusian Government R&D of Excellence), National (Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, Ministry of Culture, BBVA), as well as by stable collaboration with other European institutions.

The research team stands as priority the knowledge of the technological implications in archaeological and processes, museums and heritage management, through the following research lines: - Architecture and Urbanism in the Ancient World (Roman Empire) - Application of the new methodological technologies (drone, laser scan) - Material Culture - and Museology, among others. Furthermore, the Department of Archaeology deals in transferring archaeological scientific-technical results and knowledge through regulated teaching, seminars, field practices, organisation of conferences, publications, exhibitions, and the enhancement of the archaeological sites where the Department of Archaeology conducts excavations each year since 2004, that is Italica (Seville) and Villa Adriana (Italy). Academic and research staff have started research networks largely cross-disciplinary to the archaeological studies from 2002 to nowadays, and also increasing collaboration with several European Institutions excellent in Research.

Project description:

«PALATIA. The Imperial Villas and Palaces in the Roman period (1st-5th centuries AD)» is one of the research projects developed by the Department of Archaeology since 2019, and supported by the Spanish Government (MINECO). It is a European-wide project that aims to compile all the graphic, bibliographical, historiographical and documentary information on a total of 42 Imperial villas and palaces located throughout the Roman Empire: from Cercadilla (Cordoba, Spain) in the West to the Palace of Constantinople (Turkey) in the Eastern provinces, while the northernmost Imperial palace is located in Trier (Germany) and the most southerly ones, are the villa of Tiberius in Capri, the palace of Galerius in Thessaloniki or the Palace of Nicomedia, in present-day Anatolia (Turkey). This core research project has been provided by a specific project, «Palatia 2.0. Database of the Imperial Villas and Palaces in Roman times», which is sponsored by the BBVA Foundation and designed with a conscious heritage nature in order to disseminate accurately the scientific results.
