Professor Antonio Mihi-Ramírez, from the Department of Spanish and International Economic at the University of Granada, welcomes postdoctoral candidates interested in applying for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships (MSCA-PF) in 2022 at this University. Brief description of the institution:
The University of Granada (UGR), founded in 1531, is one of the largest and most important universities in Spain. With over 60.000 undergraduate and postgraduate students and 6.000 staff. UGR offers a total of 79 degrees, 188 master’s degrees and 28 doctoral programmes through its 127 departments and 22 centers. Consequently, the UGR offers one of the most extensive and diverse ranges of higher education programmes in Spain.
The UGR has been awarded with the "Human Resources Excellence in Research (HRS4R)", which reflects the UGR’s commitment to continuously improve its human resource policies in line with the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers. UGR is also a leading institution in research, located in the top of Spanish universities by a variety of ranking criteria, such as national R&D projects, fellowships awarded, publications, or international funding.
UGR is one of the few Spanish Universities listed in the Shanghai Top 500 ranking - Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). The edition of the ARWU 2021 places the UGR in 201-300th position in the world and as the 2nd highest ranked University in Spain (http://sl.ugr.es/0cmF), reaffirming its position as an institution at the forefront of national and international research. The UGR stands out in the specialties of Library & Information Science (position 36); Food Science & Technology (39) and Hospitality & Tourism Management (51-75), according to the latest edition by specialties of this prestigious ranking (http://sl.ugr.es/0bSp). A little below in the ranking, the UGR stands out in Mathematics (76-100) and Mining & Mineral Engineering (76-100).
Additionally, the UGR counts with 7 researchers are at the top of the Highly Cited Researchers (HCR) list (http://sl.ugr.es/0cmD), most of them related to the Computer Science scientific area. It is also well recognized for its web presence (http://sl.ugr.es/0a6i), being positioned at 54th place in the top 200 Universities in Europe.
Internationally, we bet decidedly by our participation in the calls of the Framework Programme of the European Union. For the duration of the last two Framework Programmes, the UGR has obtained a total of 67 projects, with total funding of 18.029 million euros, and for H2020, 119 projects with total funding around 29.233 million euros.
Brief description of the Centre/Research Group:
The Faculty of Economics and Management comprised more than 300 teachers and researchers in 25 departments. The faculty is one of the bigger of Granada University, with 7,300 students enrolled in this faculty during the last academic year. It has also a preeminent place main as center of research. According to the impact factor, Economics is the 3th field of knowledge with a higher number of research papers of Granada University. Percentage of International authorship in these papers is near 50%. Concerning the Department of International and Spanish Economics, here, the research group SEJ-609 “Analysis of Migration, International Economics and Knowledge, AMIKO”, coordinated by prof. Antonio Mihi-Ramirez, is a young research group focused on international Economics and migration. It is responsible of more than 200 research papers, 11 Phd thesis, 13 research projects, among others.
Together with his supervisor, the successful applicant will develop a personalized Career Development Plan to expand the competencies and expertise needed for consolidation of his/her career as a researcher.
Impact of employment on migration and inequality in Spain (“IEMI”)
Various theoretical approaches point to the level of unemployment as one of the main push factors explaining Emigration over time. The same applies to inequity. Both factors are closely related.
It has been observed for countries such as Spain that during recessive phases of the economic cycle emigration increases considerably as employment decreases. However, this situation is not corrected to the same extent when the economy improves. The impact of the level of employment on emigration is less during economic expansions than during recessions in the case of Spain. In other words, the improvement in employment has no automatic or synchronized effect on migration (nor inequity)
The amount of employment matters, but so does the type of employment. Job insecurity increases during recessions and remains during economic expansions in the case of Spain, where low wages and high wage inequality predominate. Moreover, after the last major global recession, there has been a substantial and sustained increase in emigration and in the levels of inequality in Spain, issues that have not occurred at this level since the 1980s.
This situation means that the impact of redistribution policies on low-income households is much less in phases of expansion than in recessions.
Therefore, this research has several objectives:
• to investigate whether the high level of unemployment causes greater emigration and inequality in Spain than in other European countries.
• To know how inequality is related to emigration.
Also, the redistributive policies used to reduce inequality are used in a very different way in the OECD countries. European countries start from a similar pre-tax income, but there are large disparities when net household income is considered. Therefore, the aim is also
• to find out whether the redistributive policies used in Spain explain the greater increase in inequality than in other European countries, and to detect which of these policies are more effective in reducing emigration and inequality.
Research plan: 1) review of the relevant literature, 2) proposal of a study model and design of measurement instruments, 3) field work, 4) information processing and 5) dissemination of results. Dissemination plan: joint actions with socio-economic agents and publication in ISI-JCR journals.
The successful applicant is expected to contribute decisively to the research plan. Also, ability to publish in English in peer-reviewed journals and excellent knowledge of statistic methodologies are of prime importance.
Planned start date of the candidate if selected: from 04/2023.
