Understanding international entrepreneurs (“expat-preneuers”)
The growing involvement of expatriates in the development of entrepreneurial businesses is observed together with the increasing expatriation numbers.
Entrepreneurship of foreigners in host countries is a traditional field of interest for scholars who analyse diaspora entrepreneurship, migrant entrepreneurs and expatriate entrepreneurs.
Expat-preneurs are not entrepreneurs within the context of “South to North” migration (a.k.a. "ethnic entrepreneurs" or "immigrant entrepreneurs") but it is a new and growing reality where foreign global entrepreneurs come from developed economies, which entails several differences, advantages and disadvantages.
Expat-preneurs move from developed to developed countries. Therefore, we suppose that they should be less necessity-driven entrepreneurs. Indeed, these expatriates are usually high skilled and do not face any issues with language, unemployment, or discrimination.
Hence, this project focuses on two types of international entrepreneurs, "expat-preneurs": pre-departure expat-preneurs, who emigrate to other countries to create or expand a business outside their own country, and transitioned expat-preneurs, expatriates who, after a period, decide to become entrepreneurs, starting with an established customer base, capital, contacts and knowledge of the environment.
Our aim is to understand the reasons for entrepreneurship in other countries and the differences and similarities between global entrepreneurs. In addition, we pay attention to gender perspective.
Research plan: 1) review of the relevant literature, 2) proposal of a study model and design of measurement instruments, 3) field work, 4) information processing and 5) dissemination of results. Dissemination plan: joint actions with socio-economic agents and publication in ISI-JCR journals.
The successful applicant is expected to contribute decisively to the research plan. Also, ability to publish in English in peer-reviewed journals and excellent knowledge of statistic methodologies are of prime importance.
Planned start date of the candidate if selected: from 04/2023.
