Professor Blanca Biel, from the Department of Atomic, Molecular and Nuclear Physics (SAMBA group - Simulations of Advanced Materials and Biomolecules for Applications) at the University of Granada, welcomes postdoctoral candidates interested in applying for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships (MSCA-PF) in 2021 at this University. Brief description of the institution:

The University of Granada (UGR), founded in 1531, is one of the largest and most important universities in Spain. With over 60.000 undergraduate and postgraduate students and 6.000 staff. UGR offers a total of 89 degrees, 110 master’s degrees and 28 doctoral programmes through its 123 departments and 27 centers. Consequently, the UGR offers one of the most extensive and diverse ranges of higher education programmes in Spain.

The UGR has awarded with the "Human Resources Excellence in Research (HRS4R)", which reflects the UGR’s commitment to continuously improve its human resource policies in line with the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers. UGR is also a leading institution in research, located in the top of Spanish universities by a variety of ranking criteria, such as national R&D projects, fellowships awarded, publications, or international funding. UGR is one of the few Spanish Universities listed in the Shanghai Top 500 ranking - Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) (http://sl.ugr.es/0bsW). For the duration of the last two Framework Programmes, the UGR has obtained a total of 67 projects, with total funding of 18.029 million euros, and for H2020, 118 projects with total funding around 29.115 million euros.

Brief description of the Centre/Research Group:

The FAMN department is a competitive lab whose members actively undertake research in high-impact areas such as quantum information, nuclear physics, nuclear medicine, and condensed matter at the atomic scale. The candidate will benefit from a multidisciplinary environment with frequent visits from researchers from other national and international institutions. Computational resources such as access to supercomputer facilities will be provided by the Universidad de Granada and the Spanish Supercomputing Network. The International Project Office of the University of Granada (UGR), as host institution, will provide support to applicants throughout the proposal preparation process.

Dr. Blanca Biel, the project supervisor, has extensive experience in Density Functional Theory (DFT)-based and quantum transport simulations in 1D and 2D materials. She has successfully obtained funding in several national and international research calls, including MSCA (she is currently supervising a MSCA-IF-2018 research fellow at her group). The proposed research project will be framed within two ongoing research projects of which Dr. Biel is PI: ‘Modeling of complex materials: biomolecules and two-dimensional systems’ and ‘Exploring defects in novel 2D materials by advanced simulations at the atomic scale’. The candidate will thus be able to benefit during his/her postdoctoral stay from the active collaborations with both national and international theoretical and experimental groups maintained in those projects.

Project description:

The research topic will focus on the investigation, by means of Density Functional Theory (DFT), of the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of novel bidimensional (2D) materials such as Janus transition metal dichalcogenides, MXenes, magnetic 2D materials, etc. We will consider two main potential research lines, depending on the candidate’s interest and skills:

  • The impact of point-like and extended defects in 2D materials. We will explore the electronic properties of point-like (vacancies, dopants, interstitials, …) as well as extended (grain boundaries) defects, taking into account the presence of strain and/or different types of substrates. Lateral heterostructures built up by joining two different 2D materials will be also considered in the next step, to investigate, among other possibilities, the most suitable candidates for their potential use as p-n junctions in a future all-planar nanoelectronics.
  • Investigation of the spintronics and/or optical properties of these novel 2D materials in the presence of defects.

Potential application of this research to such systems as gas sensors, catalysts, optoelectronic devices, etc. will be explored, as well as rich-physics phenomena such as the already observed charge density waves or trion modulation.


Advanced user of DFT-based methods (SIESTA, VASP, OpenMX, …). Only candidates with demonstrated experience in this methodology will be considered for this position.


Good publication track record.

Knowledge of 2D materials.

Experience on optics and/or spintronics., quantum transport, etc.
