Description

Professor Margarita Aguilera Gómez, from the Department of Microbiology at the University of Granada, welcomes postdoctoral candidates interested in applying for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowships (MSCA-IF) in 2018 at this University. Please note that applicants must comply with the Mobility Rule (more information: http://sl.ugr.es/09Qg).

Brief description of the institution:

The University of Granada (UGR), founded in 1531, is one of the largest and most important universities in Spain. It serves more than 60000 students per year, including many foreign students, as UGR is the leader host institution in the Erasmus program. UGR, featuring 3650 professors and more than 2000 auxiliary personnel, offers a total of 75 degrees through its 112 departments and 28 centers.

UGR is also a leading institution in research, located in the top 5/10 of Spanish universities by a variety of ranking criteria, such as national R&D projects, fellowships awarded, publications, or international funding. UGR is one of the few Spanish Universities listed in the Shanghai Top 500 ranking (http://www.arwu.org/), and it is also well recognized for its web presence (http://www.4icu.org/top200/).

Internationally, we bet decidedly by our participation in the calls of H2020, both at partner and coordination. For the duration of the Seventh Framework Programme, the UGR has obtained a total of 66 projects, with total funding of 17.97 million euros, and for H2020, until 2015, more than 25 projects with total funding of more than 6 million euros. Our more than 3,000 researchers are grouped into 365 research groups covering all scientific fields and disciplines.

Brief description of the Centre/Research Group

Dr. Aguilera is Associate Professor at the UGR, Dept. Microbiology at the Faculty of Pharmacy belonging to BIO-190 research group. Biomedical Research Center (CIBM, cibm.ugr.es) and the Bio-Health Research Institute (IBS-Granada, www.ibsgranada.es/) are the research institution supporting this group. Main research topics are Microbial taxonomy (genomics, species, strain variability, biotypes), microbial exopolisaccharides, human microbiota, biotechnology, nanotechnology and molecular biology genetic variability, and omics health biomarkers (pharmacogenetics). Moreover, multiple collaborations with national and international institutes of research, hospitals, universities and recently with regulatory authorities (EFSA, EC) will allow to integrate the applicant in the group and into multidisciplinary programmes and approaches, needed, to face the new arena challenges in this translational research in line with e.g. One Health approach and Global actions for health.

The supervisor will design and execute a supervision plan in agreement with key collaborators and the objectives and execution plan: objectives/tasks/deliverables/milestones/training/communication of the applicant project. Supervisor will guide the applicant through the responsible accomplishment of the objectives and provide the appropriate and continuous feedback for improvements for complying with correspondent deadlines of every task. Moreover, supervisor has already enforced the networking of the applicant and verifies the commitment of the research group for guaranteeing specific possibilities for consolidation through the existing formal frames in academic and entrepreneurial areas. Finally, she will promote the liaison with Business and Innovation Center (BIC) and Research Results Transfer Office (OTRI) to effectively transfer the results.

Project description

Omics, diet, gut microbiota and health: gut microbiome, resistome, epigenome, metabolome, probiotics and pharmabiotics

Omics technologies create a large amount of data whose interpretation by inspection can be a daunting task. A major challenge of using omics data (genomics, metabolomics, transcriptomics, proteomics) is to integrated and translate these lists of genes/proteins/metabolites into a better understanding of the underlying several biological phenomena.

Moreover, an important field with recent studies are approaching promised strategies on quantitative genetics for better understanding the overall host genetic architecture that influence gut microbiota or viceversa, therefore it is possible to evaluate the impact in health or diseases through diet or intervention with pharmabiotics or probiotics. The resistome is the information regarding the antimicrobial resistance genes pattern present in individual microbiota. Moreover, the evolution of knowledge of human genetic population studies are aimed to detect the importance of gene variability involved in differential responses to the putative structure that interacts with individual. Previous experience in other areas such as nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics could be extended and applied to gut interactions and study the effects probiotics exert when they are employed as functional foods or nutraceuticals.

The detection of specific polymorphisms or single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), as determinants or biomarkers of clinical genomics, is important for those that occur with high frequency in the general population and those able to modify or regulate important proteins in metabolic pathways, generating changes in the activity of these enzymes and the impact in different.
