RESEARCH DESCRIPTION

The candidate is expected to undertake basic and applied research in marine foundation species (seagrasses, macroalgae such rhodoliths and others, corals, etc.). The candidate should bring strong analytical expertise to the group through varying techniques (molecular genetics, GIS-based tools, stable isotopes and food web markers, etc.). Collaborations with the group members are desirable, though the candidate may interact with whoever he/she considers suitable. Working languages are English and/or Spanish. Diving skills are desirable to undertake experimentation in the sea altogether research members of the group.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE CENTRE / RESEARCH GROUP / SUPERVISOR

The Research Group in Biodiversity and Conservation (BIOCON) is constituted by lectures and researchers associated to the University Research Institute on Sustainable Aquaculture and Marine Ecosystems (IU-ECOAQUA) of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Our general goal is to understand the origin, structure and functioning of marine biodiversity at different organization levels, promoting the responsible management of marine biological resources, and, consequently, to foster marine conservation. A full description of research activities and components can be found at BIOCON website. The research group is part of the IU ECOAQUA, a conjunction of excellence research groups within the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria that aims to unravel environmental and management issues of aquatic organisms living in the marine waters of the Canary Islands and nearby geographic areas.

In the last 5 years, the members of BIOCON has been involved in over 12 research projects from national and international competitive calls, as well as transference projects with industry, for a total amount of 4.5 million euro. This funding has provided the group with cutting-edge infrastructures to deepen the study of marine ecosystems. The creation of the research Institute IU ECOAQUA was built upon a research project funded by the EU (an ERA CHAIR project of the 7 Framework Program) to promote the creation of excellence centers across European countries within the European research environment. In the last 5 years, the group has published 74 papers in peer-reviewed international journals included in the JCR, > 50% published in Q1 journals. A total of 11 PhD dissertations has been carried out supervised by members of the research group.
