Description
Brief description of the Institution and Research Group
SACSIS is selecting a competitive candidate for the Electronics Engineering and Systems Division (DSIE) at the Technical University of Cartagena. This is a Research Group bringing together more than twenty-five PhD. teachers and researchers from the departments of Electronics Technology, Information and Communication Technologies, and Systems and Automation Engineering. The DSIE has many laboratories located at the "Campus Muralla del Mar" in Cartagena (Spain).
The research group DSIE has a laboratory called the "Computer Vision and Intelligent Vehicles Laboratory" which is fully equipped with three vehicles, multiple sensors (eg HDL 64E, VPL16, VIS and ToF cameras) and real time computer systems such as Jetson TX2 and compactRIO. This makes it one of the most important in Spain. The development of driverless vehicles is increasingly linked to artificial intelligence systems. NVIDIA, the world leader in the development of GPUs, offers specific cards for autonomous driving based on artificial intelligence. The laboratory works at all levels present in the development of autonomous vehicles. At the hardware level, they mechanically modify street vehicles adding the precise robotization of the accelerator, brake and steering wheel. They have also implemented a sensor system for the vehicle and installed new communication buses to interconnect the equipment. At the software level, they work on the development of sensor fusion systems, obstacle detection systems which integrate all onboard sensors, location and trajectory generation algorithms.
Project description:
In the next decade, autonomous vehicles will have to coexist with a global automobile fleet estimated at 1,200 million non-autonomous vehicles. Over the last year, the group has been integrating machine learning and deep learning systems to classify objects and improve driving. They currently have an active project (SPIP2017-02286) in which we are gathering driving styles from different drivers to integrate them into an artificial intelligence system to improve autonomous driving. The candidate can be integrated into any of the laboratory activities obtaining knowledge in multiple areas during their stay.
