Description

INTRODUCTION

The majority of Europe’s urban population is exposed to levels of air pollutants above new World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. The European Environment Agency (EEA) has reported that human activities are the main drivers behind the dangerous levels. The MODELAIR project will develop an artificial intelligence (AI) tool that enables informed and sensible decisions for air pollution control in urban areas.

MODELAIR “Groundbreaking tools and models to reduce air pollution in urban areas” is a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions project funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe Framework Programme. The MODELAIR project proposes a combination of theoretical, experimental, numerical and data-driven science that will simulate, control and design new disruptive technologies for future sustainable cities.

The research and training network unites 5 European laboratories (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid - E.T.S.I. Aeronáutica y del Espacio, Université Libre de Bruxelles - Département d'Aéro-Thermo-Mécanique, KTH Royal Institute of Technology - Mechanics, Centro de Supercomputación de Barcelona, University of Bristol) and 4 companies (ARUP, Microflown Technologies, BuildWind, Air Quality Consultants) and will train 12 Doctoral Candidates (DCs) in fluid dynamics, atmospheric physics and chemistry, engineering, and computer science. The multidisciplinary training will equip the next generation of scientists and entrepreneurs with unique expertise at the intersection of data analysis, fluid dynamics and machine learning (ML).

If you are interested in fluid mechanics, air quality, artificial intelligence and data-driven modeling, among the 12 Ph.D. positions offered in this multi-disciplinary and inter-sectoral PhD program, there is room for those who would like to combine theory with:

  • Studying major cities in Europe to reduce pollution (PhD.1, PhD.2, PhD.3, PhD.4, PhD.5, PhD.6, PhD.7, PhD.8, PhD.10, PhD.11, PhD.12)
  • Performing computational fluid dynamics numerical simulations and experiments (PhD.3, PhD.4, PhD.5, PhD.6, PhD.8, PhD.9, PhD.10, PhD.11)
  • Using data analysis and machine learning tools to build predictive models (PhD.1, PhD.2, PhD.4, PhD.5, PhD.7, PhD.9, PhD.12)

All the positions offer the opportunity of doing an academic and an industrial secondment during your PhD with a total duration between 5-12 months.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Hold an MSc or equivalent in chemistry, mathematics, engineering, physics, computer science, or any related fields.
  • Not be in possession of a doctoral degree.
  • Not having resided or exercised your main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country for which you are applying for the position for more than 12 months in the last 36 months.
  • Fluent English is required. Any other language, especially the language of the country in which the application is submitted, would be a plus.
  • Research experience is not required, but it would be a plus.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • Starting date: March / September 2023. The duration will be 36 months.
  • You will be a Marie Sklodowska-Curie fellow.
  • Competitive salary (indicated during the interview process).

If you would like to be part of this remarkable Doctoral Network, please send an email to modelair.recruitment@gmail.com with:

  • Your CV,
  • A brief presentation/motivation letter,
  • 2 recommendation letters,
  • academic records

Please, indicate in the subject of the email which position you are applying for. If you would like to apply for more than one position (no more than 4), please, state the order of preference.
