The Systems Analysis Unit at the IMDEA Energy Institute, welcomes postdoctoral candidates interested in applying for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowships (MSCA-IF) in 2019.

Brief description of the institution:

The IMDEA Energy Institute is a Research Centre located in the town of Mostoles, in the region of Madrid (Spain). Its R&D activities are aimed to promote the development and implementation of an efficient and sustainable energy system. Accordingly, research activities are oriented to fostering the development of renewable energies and clean energy technologies in general.

Being created in 2007, IMDEA Energy has experienced a fast growth reaching in a few years a relevant international position in R&D activities on energy topics. An essential factor for explaining this successful development has been the ability for attracting top level researchers, as well as the availability of new and excellent scientific infrastructures, favoring the achievement of outstanding scientific results.

Brief description of the Unit

The Systems Analysis Unit at IMDEA Energy, specializes in assessing the technical feasibility, the socio-economic viability and the environmental performance of different energy alternatives, problems or scenarios. For that purpose, the unit has developed strong capabilities and has a sound expertise in (i) modelling, simulation and exergy and economic analysis of energy production systems, as biofuels, renewable energy systems, hydrogen, etc., and analysis of its integration in energy and circular economy policies, (ii) life cycle sustainability assessment, LCSA, multicriteria decision analysis, MCDA, and ecodesign of energy systems, and (iii) prospective analysis through energy systems modelling and scenario analysis for sustainability –oriented energy planning, in which the unit has developed a regional model for Madrid and a Spanish national model for electricity production (transport in progress).

Project description

Our unit is seeking a candidate to integrate in a multidisciplinary team for the development of new methodologies for the modelling and optimization of energy systems. The specific objectives of the project are:

  • Research and development in the field of Energy Systems Analysis.
  • R&D on energy scenarios, energy modelling and roadmapping.

The candidate should have a strong understanding of energy scenarios modelling and/or economics, good understanding of environmental problems associated to energy production and use, and a good overview of energy policies at European level.

The ideal candidate would have an energy-related PhD degree in energy economics, energy engineering or related matters (industrial engineers, physicists, mathematicians, etc.). Programming abilities for tailored modelling would be considered very positively along with experience in forecasting, backcasting, and system dynamics.
