Description

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

The University of Valladolid is one of the most important centers of Higher Education in Spain. It counts on four campuses -Valladolid, Palencia, Segovia and Soria, over 100 degrees, 29 doctoral programs (14 with Honor Mention) and 68 postgraduate degree, accredited international relations and prestigious research Centers. On average, nearly 25,000 students enroll each year, counts on more than 2,500 teachers and nearly 1,000 people dealing with administration tasks and other services. Over 60% of students do internships in companies and other institutions. It offers a comprehensive range of double international degrees, and promotes the transfer of research results.

The UVA has 300 km2 for researching activities, 5 buildings devoted exclusively to research, 4 Certified Laboratories Industry serving nearly 300 research laboratories, 19 research institutes and all departments needed. A landmark Lab-building (foundation 2014), called LUCIA (0% CO2 emissions; 0% energy consumption, with LEED Platinum certification and Green Certification), with 2,100 m2 for researching related to efficiency energy buildings and agrofood (nutrition, food and dietary laboratories).

The UVA manages around 180/year research projects financed through competitive public R+D+i calls (European, national or regional), and approximately 500 contracts and agreements aimed at the transfer of knowledge and technology, amounting to an average value of over fifteen million Euros per annum. Moreover, its researchers take part in almost 250 further projects and contracts managed by other institutions.

UVA has been taking part in a very active way in different European projects, at research or training level, during the last 20 years. There is a long experience in international projects developed by different groups of research in the University and different fields of knowledge.

The objective of the recognized research group Advanced Technologies Applied to Sustainable Rural Development (TADRUS) is the development of research, development and innovation activities aimed at the sustainable development of the rural environment, related to the application of new instrumentation technologies in agroforestry processes, automation and advanced control of agro-environmental processes, the introduction of new techniques for environmental improvement of the agroforestry environment, the improvement of the natural environment of the rural environment and the application of information and communication technologies in agro-environmental processes. A part of this group has formed a consolidated research unit recognized by the Government of Castilla y León and brings together researchers with extensive experience in the management of national and European projects such as "Ammonia Trapping" http://ammoniatrapping.com/, waste management from demolitions and waste management of a rabbit farm.

RESEARCH/PROJECT DESCRIPTION

With the success of the EU policies to reduce SO2 and NOx emissions, ammonia (NH3) is still a key challenge. In 2001, NEC Directive 2001/81/CE established the first national ceilings for NH3 emissions until 2010. The new NEC Directive establishes that new emission reduction commitments for 2020 onwards, and 2030 onwards, are applicable. In the case of Spain reductions of 3% and 16%, respectively, are expected. These ceilings are a limitation for the growth of the livestock sector, and for the competitiveness of the EU producers. The release in the market of a new technology capable of reduce NH3 emissions will be revolutionary. In Ammonia Trapping, researchers demonstrate at on-farm pilot plant scale that the GPMT successfully captures NH3 from manure and from the air (in animal buildings), recovering N as un-volatilized (NH4)2SO4 fertilizer, ready to be exported. Reductions of 52% were achieved from manure and a minimum of 3,1% from air on a farm that was continuously ventilated naturally and the concentration of ammonia in the air never exceeded 20 ppm (in lab prototypes, ammonia recoveries close to 100% were achieved), avoiding 59 Kg of NH3 emissions (0.2Kg NH3/d).

Description of the offer:

Based on our previous experience, now a more compact commercial prototype will be developed, meeting all the requirements of an easy to handle prototype for farmers, and promoting policy initiatives as the transfer of GPMT as a BAT (Best Available Technique) to the livestock sector. After demonstrating the technology viability, next step is to escalate results to the livestock sector market by means of commercial prototypes and exploitation plans.
