Description
Study Title
IN VITRO STUDY OF LOSS OF ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE IN KLEBSIELLA PNEUMONIAE IN ABSENCE OF ANTIBIOTIC PRESSURE.
Study duration: 2 years
Rationale
Project aims at evaluating loss of antibiotic resistance especially plasmid mediated, by bacteria ( klebsiella pneumoniae) when the bacteria multiply in absence of antibiotic pressure. The studies done in the past suggest that selective pressure is required for sustenance of plasmids in bacteria despite it they tend to lose these plasmids leading to reversal of antibiotic resistance.
Objectives
- Isolation of pan resistance klebsiella pneumoniae from clinical samples
- Sub culturing the klebsiella pneumoniae strain over a period of 2-3 months in absence of antibiotic pressure and repeat antibiotic sensitivity testing intermittently to observe changes in antibiotic susceptibility.
Expected Outcomes
- Change in antibiotic sensitivity of Klebsiella pneumoniae from resistance to sensitive will indicate loss of resistance mechanism acquired because of antibiotic pressure.
- Stopping usage of that particular drug globally for time long enough will render the organism susceptible which otherwise had resistance to that drug.
This shall help fostering new strategies to control antibiotic resistance in hospital environment.
