Project: Multifunctional gas sensors by tailoring metal oxides

 

Environmental and industrial monitoring is a growing research and development field demanded by the progressive industrialization and related use of carbon-based fuels. While society moves towards a green-based economy, a control of the gases generated by human activities is required in order to minimise their impact, including their greenhouse effect. The ubiquitous monitoring of such gases can be achieved through portable gas sensors or gas sensor networks, which ideally should be low-power consuming, highly sensitive, selective and fast. Current commercial gas sensors are based on materials that do not fulfil all requirements, especially the selectivity and the low power consumption, and new and improved functional (nano)materials and detection principles must be developed to obtain a new generation of gas sensors.

In this frame, this project presents a new approach towards the development of advanced functional materials for selective solid-state gas sensors. The foundational idea relies on the simultaneous occurrence of different physical and chemical changes induced during the interactions of the material with a particular gas. So, by using different measuring methods, e.g., electrical and optical, different responses will be obtained. This concept will give rise to a specific fingerprint for each gas and each particular measuring method. Therefore, one sensitive material, interrogated by different measuring methods, will be converted into an electronic nose (e-nose), providing the required selectivity properties that a classical device typically lacks.

 

Skills/qualifications

- Experience with the fabrication, characterisation and testing of solid state gas sensors

- Excellent writing skills in English

- Ability to work in an interdisciplinary research environment

 

Required Languages: English Good to excellent
