- Soil ecology,

- Behavioural ecology,

- Life-history evolution

- Evolutionary Ecology of Earthworms.

Project description:

Animal Ecology Group (GEA) has a long standing tradition of studies on the interaction between animals and the environment. The research group is composed by 3 titular researchers (Prof. Dr. Jorge Domínguez, Dr. Alberto Velando, Dr. Manuel Aira), 2 Ramón y Cajal researchers (Dr. Sin-Yeon Kim, Dr. Mª Gómez), a Juan de la Cierva post-doc researcher (José Noguera), a postdoctoral researcher (Hugo Martínez), 4 predoctoral students (Javier Díaz, Náyade Álvarez, Belén Otero, Joana Calado) and 2 technicians (Alberto da Silva, Natalia Ribao).

Prof. Domínguez has worked broadly in different aspects of the biology and ecology of earthworms, including phylogeny and systematics and different aspects of behavioural and evolutionary ecology and on the evolution of life-histories. His research activity was initiated in 1990 in UVigo. The undergone projects have focused in phylogeny and systematics of lumbricid earthworms and different aspects of soil ecology and agroecology, as well as in the interactions between earthworms and microorganisms and in the processing of organic wastes through vermicomposting. Dr. Velando has worked broadly in different aspects of the evolution of life-histories, including quantitative genetics of lifehistory traits and using bird species as study models. His research activity were initiated in 1995 in Universidad de A Coruña & Parque Nacional Islas Atlánticas.

Undergone projects have focused in the evolution of life-histories and different aspects of behavioural ecology, as well as in the biology of endangered species. The outcomes of the research team in the field where the candidate will participate have been published in scientific journals of high impact. In the last 5 years, the whole group has published c. 85 scientific papers.

Research area:

Environmental Sciences and Geology (ENV)

Life Sciences (LIF))

The University of Vigo (UVigo) is a public Spanish university located in Galicia (Northwest Spain). It comprises 3 campuses, the main one in Vigo, and two more in Pontevedra (30 Km from Vigo) and Ourense (95 Km from Vigo).

Its activities are funded by the Spanish and Galician governments (structural and competitive funding) as well as through financing obtained from RDI activities (private contracts, collaborations with industry, patents, consultancy, etc.).

In the last years UVigo has enormously increased its scientific output and its capacity to obtain external resources, being listed in the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities in 2011 and 2012. In the last 10 years, UVigo has participated in more than 60 EU research projects totalling more than 25 million euros
