Outline

We propose to develop an economical post-alloying technology for electrical steels using a novel coating and thermal diffusion process so that the chemistry of the material is adjusted after final dimensions and critical microstructural characteristics have been achieved. Such materials would provide game changing performance and significant environmental and cost benefits.

Our partners Cogent Power, a world leading manufacturer of electrical steels, are ideally placed to

exploit the new materials and provide the project with the necessary commercial guidance.

There are two main scientific strands to the PhD project:

  1. Economic delivery of a high flux of silicon to the surface of the steel and diffusion past the surface barrier.
  2. Magnetic properties of optimised silicon depth profiles.

Applicants for a studentship must have obtained, or be about to obtain, a 2:1 degree or higher in a relevant subject or a master's degree with distinction in the research dissertation in a relevant discipline.
