Outline
Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD studentship in eye tracking, psychophysics and fMRI at the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences, in partnership with our collaborators in the Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre (CUBRIC).
Associated with numerous disorders, the cause of infantile nystagmus (IN) remains unknown. A recent model purports to explain the genesis of IN under the assumption that smooth pursuit eye movements are normal in this condition and cortical control of the optokinetic response has been disrupted. Using neuroimaging (fMRI), we will test this hypothesis to determine whether such a neural dysfunction underlies the onset of nystagmus. We will also evaluate two novel methodologies for assessing the impact of treatments for IN.
