About
Raising Voice for Water Security: The Dynamics of Citizenship, Engagement and Volunteerism in Accountability Processes in Africa

Fully funded social science / interdisciplinary PhD opportunity (UK or international students), funded by the Hydro Nation Scholars, Programme of the Scottish Government
Working with the School of Geography and Sustainable Development, University of St Andrews, Mzumbe University, Tanzania and the NGO Water Witness International on research to investigate the ways in which active citizenship can improve service delivery, good governance and sustainable water management.
This globally ground-breaking research will include field work with project partners and communities in one or more of Tanzania, Kenya,Ethiopia, Zambia and Liberia. The research will focus on understanding the factors which encourage and enable people to demand their rights around water, sanitation, climate resilience and environmental protection, and in particular will explore how accountability initiatives can reach and benefit women and marginalised people. The insights generated by the work will support the growing community of policy makers, practitioners and researchers who see accountability based approaches as the key to delivering UN Sustainable Development Goal 6: sustainable access to safe water and sanitation for all. We strongly encourage suitably qualified African scholars to apply.
Applicants must have a first class or upper second class bachelor’s degree, a relevant postgraduate qualification, at least 2 years relevant experience, and must be able to demonstrate a high level of competence in conducting research and academic writing (in English).
