Offer Description
This doctoral dissertation is part of the STASTA project, which aims to study comparatively and diachronically the relationship between the standardisation of market tools (weights, measures, coinage), and interrelated developments in literary culture, politics, and religious ideology in the Greco-Roman world from the 4th century BCE to the 4th century CE. More specifically, the doctoral dissertation will study the rich and diverse corpus of documentation concerning the agoranomoi (800+ stone inscriptions; 300+ mentions on Greek weights; 250+ attestations in Classical literature). The study of this corpus aims to reconstruct the establishment of a metrological system, in its legal and administrative dimensions, by retracing the legislative process of creating metrological standards and defining prototypes, and by studying the functions and social representations of magistrates in charge of controlling weights and measures in a commercial context. The dissertation may be written in either English or in French.
