University of Wroclaw invites applications for the research position of post-doc at the Centre for the Study of the Ancient World at the Faculty of Historical and Pedagogical Sciences

Applications are invited from those who fulfil the statutory requirements specified in the Higher Education Act from 20th July 2018 (Dz. U. z 2018 r., poz. 1668) and the statutes of the University of Wroclaw.

 

A post-doc in the Center for the Study of the Ancient World, Faculty of Historical and Pedagogical Sciences, University of Wroclaw within the NCN Maestro project "Epigraphic culture in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East in antiquity: status, display, democracy, identity". This is basically a quantitative epigraphy project (see: https://hist.uni.wroc.pl/Instytut-Historyczny/Epigraphy-project/Project-...).

 

The candidate is expected to have:

  1. A successful candidate should hold a PhD in classics/ ancient history/ ancient oriental studies, earned not earlier than 2016, specializing in Semitic or Greek epigraphy (Palmyrene in particular).
  2. A candidate who holds more than one doctoral degree, please be advised that she/he is qualified for this position if the earliest doctoral degree was granted no earlier than 2016.
  3. She/he should have a very good knowledge of Greek, knowledge of Latin is additional bonus.
  4. She/he should have reading ability in relevant modern languages other than English.
  5. Please be advised to make sure that you meet the NCN criteria for post-docs in NCN-funded projects (https://www.ncn.gov.pl/sites/default/files/pliki/uchwaly-rady/2021/uchwa...).

Additionally, the following are highly desirable:

  1. Any additional language of the ancient Near East is a bonus.
  2. Preference will be given to a candidate whose dissertation and publications are based on study of Greek or Semitic inscriptions.
  3. Other essential criteria are: publications (journal articles, chapters in edited volumes, books, authored or edited) and conference papers in antiquity studies.
  4. Experience in team work in antiquity studies is at premium.

Responsibilities at the workplace:

  1. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the study of epigraphic culture in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. She/he will contribute chapters to collaborative volumes of the project.
  2. She/he is also expected to participate in conferences.
  3. She/he is also expected to publish no less than two journal papers over the duration of her/his employment.
  4. Apart from doing research, the successful candidate is expected to teach one class (30 hours) per year.

Photocopy/scan of PhD diploma; a candidate who has not been awarded PhD yet please submit a statement from the appropriate university authorities stating that her/his dissertation has been filled and indicating the date of public defence; the application will considered only when the public defense is scheduled before 31 December 2022; it is the candidates responsibility to notify Dr. Wojciechowska (agnieszka.wojciechowska@uwr.edu.pl) that the doctoral degree has been earned prior to 31 December 2022; a successful candidate may be employed at the University of Wrocław upon submitting a PhD diploma or a statement from her/his university indicating that the doctoral degree has been conferred.

  10. Two letters of reference submitted directly by referees to prof. dr hab. Krzysztof Nawotka (krzysztof.nawotka@uwr.edu.pl); the candidate forfeits hereby her/his rights to access these letters.
  11. Information about languages you know.
  12. Information on research grants in which you are or were a PI or investigator awarded and/or implemented within 10 years prior to submitting the application; please list grants awarded by ERC, other international agencies, Foundation for Polish Science, National Science Centre and Ministry for Science and Higher Education (Poland); please declare the amount of money granted.
  13. List of papers presented to international conferences over the last 10 years.
  14. Other documents, if any, justifying candidacy for the advertised position.
