Offer Description

A postdoctoral position (scholarship/stipendium) from March 2023 is available in the Fraunhofer ITWM in Kaiserslautern, Germany. The position will be hosted in the meshfree group (www.meshfree.eu) in the Transport Process department ( https://www.itwm.fraunhofer.de/en/departments/tv.html ).

The focus of your research will be on adaptive refinement algorithms for meshfree methods, in the context of fluid flow. Specifically, your tasks will involve

  1. Developing error indicators or estimators for strong-form meshfree fluid flow simulations, with a special emphasis on the generalized finite difference method (GFDM)
  2. Coupling the developed error indicators and estimators with existing refinement algorithms
  3. Implementation in well-documented software
  4. Disseminating your research through scientific publications and conference talks
  5. Collaborating to apply your work in existing commercial projects

The work will be supervised by Pratik Suchde and Joerg Kuhnert. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Pratik Suchde ( pratik.suchde@uni.lu ). Please send applications (CV, letter of interest, PDFs of published papers, and names and contact information of at least two referees) by email to Pratik Suchde ( pratik.suchde@uni.lu ).

Candidates with a PhD in computational mathematics/physics/engineering, a drive to work collaboratively and independently, and an excellent research record are encouraged to apply. A strong background in the computational sciences is a must. Experience in meshfree methods or adaptive refinement are a plus.

Requirements

Skills/Qualifications
  • Completed (or about to complete) PhD or equivalent university degree in applied mathematics, computational physics or similar field
  • Strong background numerical analysis and/or scientific computing
  • Experience with numerical methods for solving PDEs
  • Experience in modelling, and error quantification (error estimators and indicators) for PDE solvers
  • Excellent programming skills in at least one of: Fortran, C, C++, Python
  • Good communication skills
  • Fluent English, both spoken and written
