POSTDOC position in ML-based Perception and Navigation for Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs)
Instituto de Sistemas e Robótica (ISR) - Coimbra opens a call to hire a Postdoctoral Researcher corresponding to the initial level according to the Applicable Regulation, in the scope of the Scientific Research Project – “GreenAuto”, in the context of a Mobilizing Agenda called “GreenAuto: Green innovation for the Automotive Industry”, financed under Notice 02/C05-i01/2022, framed in Ordinance No. 43-A/2022, of 19 January, and in the Portuguese Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR)
• Decree-Law nr 57/2016, from 29th August, altered by Law nr 57/2017, from 19th July, that approves a Doctoral Hiring regime to stimulate Scientific and Technological Employment in all knowledge areas (RJEC).
• Portuguese Labor Law, approved by Law nr 7/2009, from 12thFebruary in its current writing.
• Regulatory Decree Nr 11-A / 2017, of 29th December.
Scientific Area: Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, Electrical and Computer Engineering or closely related fields.
Application profile: PhD in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or closely related fields. The chosen applications will integrate a multi-disciplinary team with the objective of carrying out R&D on Perception and Navigation of AMRs for industrial environments.
NOTE: Candidates with foreign academic diplomas are obliged to present records of the equivalence/recognition of such diplomas and the conversion of the respective final notes to the Portuguese classification scale (whenever a final classification is attributed with the foreign diploma), issued by the Directorate-General for Higher Education or by a Portuguese public higher education establishment (regulated by Decree-Law no. 341/2007, of 12 October) or, in alternative, present the document of equivalence/recognition of such foreign qualifications to the corresponding Portuguese qualifications, issued by a Portuguese public higher education establishment (regulated by Decree-Law no. 283/83, of 21 June).
Project: This contract is supported by a Mobilizing Agenda called “GreenAuto: Green innovation for the Automotive Industry”, financed under Notice 02/C05-i01/2022, framed in Ordinance No. 43-A/2022, of 19 January, and in the Portuguese Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).
Work plan: The selected candidate will carry out R&D on ML-based Perception and Navigation for AMRs targeting industrial applications. The following topics, applying machine learning techniques, will be addressed:
- Obstacle detection and tracking, human activity and context perception;
- Navigation techniques that consider AMR load, map, location and risk indicators so that the robot learns which behaviors to take to avoid collisions and how to navigate safely;
- AMR local re-planning techniques;
- Robot Localization and SLAM methods to promote long-term navigation for AMRs.
Location: The Works will take place at the Instituto de Sistemas e Robótica – Universidade de Coimbra.
Duration: The contract is expected to start in October 2022 and will last for the time necessary for the execution of the project that justifies it.
Scientific orientation: Professor Doutor Urbano J. Nunes.
Monthly remuneration: Gross monthly Remuneration is 2.153,94 €, in accordance with subsection a), section 1, article 15 from Law nr 57/2017, 19th July, and with the remuneration position at initial level predicted in article 2 of Regulatory Decree nr 11-A/2017, of 29th December, correspondent to level 33 at Tabela Remuneratória Única, approved by Order nr 1553-C/2008, 31st December.
Selection method: Curricular evaluation (60%), and interview (40%) to the best 3 applications at the Curricular Evaluation phase.
Selection and attribution criteria:
In the curricular evaluation will be considered the following criteria: global merit of the curriculum vitae (40%) and adequation of the candidate to the project (60%).
In the interview, for the best 3 candidates of the Curricular Evaluation, the motivation degree and the commitment for the task to develop will be taken into consideration.
The candidates with a final evaluation of 3.5 in the scale of 5 values will be excluded. The jury reserve the right to don’t attribute the Contract in the case of no candidate has the required profile.

Publication of the results: The evaluation results will be announced within 90 days after the end of the applications submission deadline, by notifying the applicants via email. After the announcement of the results, candidates are considered automatically notified to, if they wish to do so, comment on the results on a preliminary hearing period within 10 days after that date. After this, the selected candidates will have to declare in writing their acceptance. Unless a justification worthy of consideration is presented, if the declaration is not submitted within the referred period, it is considered that the candidate waivers the contract. In case of resignation or withdrawal of the selected candidate, the next candidate with the highest evaluation score will be notified immediately.
