The successful candidate will focus primarily on detector calibration, configuration and commissioning activities. He or she will participate in the first data collection and the scientific analyzes that will follow.
The DAMIC-M group of the LPNHE is looking for high-level research candidates for a 2-year CDD position starting November 1, 2022.
DAMIC-M (DArk Matter In CCDs at Modane) is a direct dark matter detection experiment with particularly high sensitivity to light particles and the dark sector. It uses charge-coupled devices (CCDs) to search for nuclear recoil and ionization electrons induced by dark matter particles in the silicon bulk of CCDs.
The experiment will be installed in 2024 at the Underground Laboratory of Modane, France. The successful candidate will have a PhD in experimental physics, preferably in the field of particle or astroparticle physics.
Previous experience in calibrating low background detectors and Geant4 simulations will be positively assessed.
This position is funded by a grant from the European Research Council (ERC advanced grant), and is hosted by the DAMIC-M group of the LPNHE.
The LPNHE (Laboratory of Nuclear Physics and High Energies, https://lpnhe.in2p3.fr/) is a laboratory of IN2P3 (National Institute of Nuclear Physics and Particle Physics), a CNRS institute, and “Sorbonne University” and “University of Paris” universities. The laboratory is located in Paris (France). It is involved in major international collaborations in the fields of particle physics, astroparticles and cosmology. It has 130 researchers, teacher-researchers and administrative, technical and permanent engineers.
Currently, the DAMIC-M group of the LPNHE is involved in the development of test benches for the CCDs of the experiment, the development of the reading electronics, the simulation of background noise within the framework of GEANT-4, data taking and analysis of the prototype detector installed at the Modane Underground Laboratory in 2021. The research group is made up of 3 permanent researchers, 1 doctoral student and 1 postdoc.
The candidate must have a PhD degree (or equivalent) in particle physics, astrophysics or cosmology.
Desired experience: PhD in particle physics, astroparticles or observational cosmology.
