The Department of Biological and Environmental Science is currently seeking to recruit candidates to the position of

starting on January 2, 2023, or as agreed, for a fixed-term of four years.

We are looking for a highly motivated doctoral researcher with background in microbiology, molecular biology and/or evolutionary biology to pursue their doctoral studies at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland.

Plasmid-dependent bacteriophages are viruses that infect plasmid-carrying bacteria. Given that majority of antibiotic resistance genes reside in genetic elements such plasmids, these unique bacteriophages provide a mean to specifically target antibiotic resistant bacteria. In this PhD project, you will participate in experimental evolution of plasmid-dependent RNA phages, isolate and study new plasmid-dependent bacteriophages, decipher the ecological interactions between phages and their plasmid-harboring hosts. Further, you will investigate the possibility to utilize these phages therapeutically as an emergency treatment. The research group is tightly linked with biotechnology startup companies (domestic and foreign) and therefore the position provides a possibility to pursue a career in either academy or business.

During the project, the Doctoral Researcher will acquire comprehensive knowledge and experience in microbiological methods, as well as dissemination of research findings e.g. in the form of scientific publications and seminar presentations.

Qualifications we are looking for

You are the person we are looking for if you have

  1. Master’s degree, or be about to obtain Master’s degree, in a relevant field
  2. Experience in microbiology (working with phages and/or other viruses)
  3. Capability of conducting independent research, solid in English language and scientific writing

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of a Doctoral Researcher are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines.  The MSc degree required for the position must have been completed before starting the position.
