Photography and fieldwork in Geography: a study from the collection of the Photographic Library of the Centre for Geographical Studies
The documentary heritage in the Photographic Archive of the Centre for Geographical Studies is a unique scientific collection that bears witness to the practice of Portuguese Geography over nearly eight decades. It contains more than 50,000 photographic images, most of which are unique items taken in the field by generations of geographers. Thanks to the capacity that photographs have to offer a supposedly objective image of the terrain, these objects have contributed in a very special way to to affirm the place of Geography among a certain scientific modernity since the end of the 19th century. In the specific case of the CEG's Photographic Library, we are faced with a set of documents of primary importance for the reconstitution of the history of university Geography in Portugal and the main areas of the world where it focused its work.
Given the specific nature of the respective supports, the state of degradation of many of the materials used and the resulting curative conservation requirements, the CEG's Photographic Collection is also very vulnerable. For this reason, priority is given to the completion of its complete inventory and to the study of the scientific contexts that framed the production of the main series of photographs that integrate this photographic collection. In parallel, CEG intends to promote the development of tasks related to the public visibility and diffusion of this fonds, in view of the responsibility that the Photographic Archive has to make these materials available for the new uses that teaching, research and society demand from these types of documents so familiar to the work of geographers.
The work to be done aims to contribute to the following general objectives of the CEG's scientific programme: 1) Highlight the importance of photography as a working tool for geographers in the field; 2) Deepen the study of specific photographic series focused on territories and on specific study missions, as well as the study of sets of photographs by the same geographer; 3) Enhance the potential of the photographic images kept in the Photographic Archive for contemporary uses, namely those associated with communication with non-specialised audiences.
The work plan of the grant holder is as follows:
1- Collaborate in the tasks of organisation, inventorying and conservation of the photographs integrated in the CEG's Photographic Archive;
2- Collaborate in the digitalisation of photographs, with the purpose of enlarging the CEG's Digital Photographic Archive;
3- Collaborate in the dissemination of CEG's Photographic Archive, namely by participating in the organisation of exhibitions and in the preparation of the edition of "Cadernos da Fototeca";
4- Collaborate in the response to internal and external requests of access to the collection
5- Elaborate the Master's dissertation focused on a set of material from the Photographic Library.
