Project Summary:

Identification of the most important determinants of cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality in Lisbon

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are one of the most serious health problems and the leading cause of death worldwide, both in developing and developed countries, including Portugal. However, CVD morbidity/mortality rates are not evenly distributed spatially.

Lisbon is marked by important spatial differences arising from socio-economic inequality and limited access to health services. Mortality varies along several dimensions, including age, gender, race, socioeconomic status, educational level and geography. Spatial inequalities in morbidity/mortality in Lisbon appear to be greater than in other cities of the country.

Given the spatial distribution of causes and the heterogeneity of morbidity/mortality by cardiovascular diseases, both at macro and micro levels, the aim of this work is to assess the spatial patterns of occurrences by CVD, taking into account space, as a proxy for socioeconomic conditions, access to health and social norms, to understand possible changes..
