Offer Description
Applications are open for one Research Studentship for PhD student, within the framework of project Origin of life: from hydrothermal vents to protocells (ORIGINS), (2022.05284.PTDC)/IST-ID, financed by national funds through FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC
Workplan: The objective of this research grant, leading to a doctoral dissertation, is to study the geochemical processes crucial to the origin and evolution of life on Earth, in particular in hydrothermal vents, and to apply this in the search for bio-signatures that could potentially be formed in hydrothermal vents on the icy moons of Jupiter and Saturn.
Duration: The research fellowship will have the duration of 36 months. It’s expected to begin in May 2023. Contract is not renewable.

Additional Information
Monthly maintenance allowance: According to the values for Research Fellowships awarded by FCT in Portugal (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores), the amount of the monthly maintenance allowance is €1144.64, being the payment method an option of the Fellow by Wire Transfer/Check. A personal accident insurance is also provided, as well as a voluntary social insurance (€142.21 monthly).

Selection methods: The selection methods will be distributed in two phases. The first selection phase comprises: curriculum evaluation (65% weight) and motivation letter for the work to be performed (35% weight). The top three candidates, selected in the first phase, will be remotely interviewed, which will draw up the final ranking list. In this interview, the candidates' knowledge in the research area of Astrobiology, sampling techniques, and methods of chemical analysis will be evaluated.
Composition of the selection Jury: Professor Zita Martins, Professor João Canário, and Professor Seán Jordan.
Announcement/ notification of the results: The final evaluation results will be communicated to all applicants by email.
Deadlines and procedures of complaint and appeal. A complaint may be lodged from the final decision within 15 working days, or an appeal to the Executive Board of IST-ID within 30 working days, both counted from the respective notification
