Offer Description

The Department of Biochemical and Chemical Engineering at Technical University of Dortmund is an internationally renowned research hub. To complement the team of the laboratory of biomaterials and polymer sciences we are looking for a

PhD position in Polymer Chemistry – 100 %

within the framework of a fixed-term employment contract initially limited to 36 months.

The laboratory of biomaterials and polymer sciences at the Department of Chemical- and Bio-Engineering at TU Dortmund (Germany) is well-known for its innovative designs of smart, antimicrobial, biomimetic or biocatalytic polymers and materials. Such designs give new features to existing materials, such as rendering proteins organo-soluble. This can give enzymes or artificial metallo-enzymes (ArMs) a novel reaction medium, broadening their spectrum of substrates for industrial relevant applications. Within the MetRaZymes project, a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network, it is proposed to render ArMs with advanced catalytic properties organo-soluble by modifying them with polymers. The resulting conjugates will be investigated regarding their potential in organic solvents. To achieve this ambitious goal, the selected candidate will collaborate with leading groups throughout Europe both from academia and industry. The MSCA MetRaZymes doctoral network aims at training the next generation of researchers in the field of biocatalysis and protein engineering. The PhD student (m/d/f) will work under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Joerg C Tiller on synthesizing end-group functionalized polymers and their conjugation with proteins.

The selected candidate will develop interdisciplinary skills including:

Polymer synthesis, purification and characterization

Organometallic chemistry in organic solvents

Conjugation of Proteins with Polymers

Characterization techniques of Protein Conjugates

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or similar subjects. Excellent skills in the domains of synthetic polymer chemistry and/or protein modifications are expected. Experience in performing and characterizing biocatalytic reactions is an advantage. Enthusiasm for top-quality research and good oral and written English communication skills are a must. The position is available from 01.04.2023 or at a mutually agreed date.

The successful applicants will be enrolled as PhD student at TU Dortmund. The position thereby also serves the scientific qualification of the applicant.

Applicants may be of any nationality but must fulfill the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions mobility rule: At the time of recruitment at TU Dortmund, candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity (studies or work) in Germany for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment.

We offer a uniquely stimulating interdisciplinary research environment at the interface of biological systems and polymer chemistry, a highly motivated and qualified team, individual development and training opportunities, a family-friendly working environment and a wide range of health and sports facilities. Remuneration is according to the EU Horizon Europe salary scales and the gross salary will be app. 3.269 € per month (plus family allowance, if applicable).

The Technical University of Dortmund aims to increase the proportion of women on its staff and therefore particularly encourages women to apply. Applicants with a degree of disability of at least 50 % or equivalent will be given preference in the case of equal suitability.

By submitting your application, you consent to your data being stored and processed for the purpose of the recruitment process. You can find our privacy policy on our homepage.

Applications should be sent with the usual documents (letter of motivation for the specific research project, a CV and publication list, contact details of two professional references, as well as copies of degree certificates) by email to Prof. Dr. Joerg C Tiller, E-Mail: joerg.tiller@tu-dortmund.de at BCI, BMP, Emil-Figge-Str. 66, 44227 Dortmund, Germany
