Offer Description

Renaissance Fusion is the first Magnetic Confinement Fusion company in the EU. We are building the first net-energy producing stellarator by combining proprietary innovations in modular design, the manufacturing of next-generation High-Temperature Superconducting (HTS) magnets, and liquid walls. We are forming a team of the brightest, most driven scientists and engineers to realize and commercialize our non-fusion HTS magnets within 2 years, and fusion magnets and integrated fusion solutions within 10 years.

Specifically, we are looking for a talented, energetic and creative numerical magnetohydrodynamics scientist to work on our in-house experiments involving HTS magnets and for our stellarators Chartreuse 1 and Chartreuse 2.

Our team is young, agile, international and based in the exciting city of Grenoble, by the French Alps.

Responsibilities:

  • Individual research responsibilities
    • Numerical modeling of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows relevant to stellarator design such as: duct and open-channel flows, particle transport, wall-bounded MHD turbulence subject to heat and/or mass transfers, magnetic field gradients etc.
    • Provide expertise and critical analysis of numerical results to give insight on the relevant physical mechanisms at stake – Setup and sustain external collaborations with academic and/or industrial partners on computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) topics
    • Define technical solution to meet process engineer’s specifications
  • Responsibilities as a team member
    • Assist mechanical engineers and experimentalists in the design (geometry, flow regimes…) of stellarator parts and in-house experiments

Qualifications -essential:

  • PhD in mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, physics, computational science or related field
  • 3+ years experience in numerical modeling of magnetohydrodynamic flows
  • 3+ years hands on experience with a CFD software such as ANSYS/HIMAG/openfoam or equivalent
  • Free-surface and multiphase flows modeling, turbulence closing schemes, heat and mass transfers
  • Written and oral communication skills. Ability to explain complicated concepts clearly and concisely
  • Organizational and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, curiosity and willingness to learn
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team

Qualifications -desirable:

  • Familiarity with technologies relevant to the nuclear sector (fission and/or fusion)
  • Programming skills in a scientific computing language (python, matlab, c++, fortran…)
  • Computer-Aided Design modeling and meshing
  • High performance and parallel computing
  • Post-processing of large datasets
