The Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) of Leiden University is inviting applications for the position of Assistant Professor. This position is situated within Leiden University's Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA), part of the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs (FGGA) and based in The Hague.

You will be part of a thriving research and teaching community, that is expanding partially with projects initiated in the national 2022 Social Science Sector Programme.

The Social Sciences, Humanities, Law and Economics Sciences will implement a cross-sectoral plan with a thematic focus on prosperity, participation and citizenship in a digital world. In this domain, the universities want to contribute optimally to answers to fundamental questions and challenges for society.

This position forms a bridge between two of Leiden University's Interdisciplinary Research Programmes: Social Resilience and Security and SAILS, collectively aiming to contribute to the creation of a Leiden University Resilience Hub.

Social Resilience and Security is an interdisciplinary, interfaculty collaboration, bringing together key expertise on transgressive behaviours across social research disciplines and key societal stakeholders. We team up with researchers from governance, developmental psychology, child studies, clinical psychology, criminal law, archeology, and humanities. One pillar of the project focuses on resilience; this project specifically seeks to study resilience in youth from public health, criminology and psychology perspectives, using a range of methodologies.

SAILS, Society, Artificial Intelligence and Life Sciences, is a university-wide initiative aiming to facilitate collaboration across disciplines on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Jointly, experts from among others computer science, public administration and law engage in interdisciplinary research and teaching on AI and algorithms. One area of particular interest is algorithmic decision-making, and more specifically the impact this may have on citizens, consumers and society at large.

The Assistant Professor Digital Resilience will be a key member of both teams. The position involves substantial research assessing digital risk and resilience in youth. The Assistant Professor will take the lead on many aspects of the project. That includes but is not limited to: planning the research, leading the ethics and data reviews, gathering data, independently conducting the analyses, publishing findings, co-authoring scientific output with the other team members, as well as organizing and participating in conferences.

The department is located in The Hague. The candidate must live in (or relocate to) The Netherlands for the duration of the contract.

Key responsibilities

The Institute seeks to expand its academic staff by appointment of an Assistant Professor with teaching and research expertise in digital technologies and/or resilience. The successful applicant will be expected to:

  • Develop and teach courses in risk and resilience, with a specific focus on digital resilience, at both Masters and Bachelor levels in various programs of the Institute;
  • Conduct independent research and support the further and ongoing development and implementation of the research strategy of the Institute;
  • Participate in professional-learning courses to maximize the societal impact of academic research and ensure its relevance beyond the academy;
  • Continue to build an (inter)national network that spans both academics and policymakers and practitioners working on topics related to digital risk and resilience in youth;
  • Engage in the public debate on digital resilience;
  • Actively contribute to administrative service and the renewal and ongoing improvement of educational practices at Bachelor's and Master's level;
  • Supervision of thesis and capstone projects, contribute to the tutorial system of student mentoring and advising;
  • Acquire and manage research funding and/or training projects from third-party sources, such as the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) or the European Union;

The successful candidate will be part of an ambitious and dynamic team. He or she will initially be appointed for one year and the intention to turn the position into a permanent one, based on need, funding and performance.

Salary range from € 3.974, - to € 5.439,- gross per month (pay scale 11), in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities.

Selection Criteria

  • PhD degree in the social sciences;
  • Demonstrable research in the field of resilience and/or (the societal aspects of) digital technologies;
  • Outstanding research qualities manifest in an established or developing publication record that includes publications in international peer-reviewed journals;
  • Demonstrable excellence in research-led teaching, in English-taught courses;
  • Demonstrable passion for education, in and out of the classroom (experience with blended learning technologies);
  • Demonstrable commitment to a close-knit, interdisciplinary academic community;
  • Excellent command of English (both in written and oral form);
  • Strong quantitative skills;
  • Experience in participating in interdisciplinary / multidisciplinary research;
  • Excellent network in the world of academics and professionals in the field of resilience, with special emphasis on digital resilience; domestically and internationally, demonstrable commitment to the public and political debate;
  • Experience in government-commissioned research projects, and/or success in grant acquisition or show promise to develop high-quality research grant applications;
  • Command of Dutch is considered an asset. Leiden University requires teaching staff to learn basic Dutch (passive knowledge) and obtain the University Teaching Qualifications (UTQ) within two years of appointment.
