CALL FOR ONE RESEARCH GRANT UNDER THE ResiMicrogrid RESEARCH PROJECT

Grant: Research Fellowship for MSc

Reference: ResiMicrogrid/BI/02

Application period: 27th July to 10th August, 2022

The Institute of Systems and Robotics of the University of Coimbra (ISR-UC) opens a call for applications for one (1) Research Fellowship for MSc. in the framework of the R&D project ResiMicrogrid - Optimização e gestão de Microredes para fornecimento de potência em situações críticas ou desastrosas, with the reference UTAP-EXPL/CA/0065/2021 financed by FCT through national funds in the following conditions:

Scientific area: Electrotechnical and Computer Engineering or others.

Admission requirements: Students enrolled in a PhD. program in Electrotechnical and Computer Engineering or in related areas, or alternatively, an MSc degree in Electrotechnical and Computer Engineering, or in related areas enrolled in a non-degree course (curso não conferente de grau) in accordance with article 6, paragraphs 1 and 2 of the FCT Scholarship Regulation. Preference is given to candidates with knowledge of UPS and storage systems (electrical batteries), protection systems, command and control of loads.

Although the recipients must be enrolled in a cycle of studies leading to the attribution of an academic degree or in a course not conferring an academic degree, at the time of application it is not necessary for the candidate to have made such an enrollment, and proof of enrollment must be presented until the fellowship is contractualized. Candidates are only required to meet the requirements to enroll in the training offer. If there are candidates already enrolled (including attending a course), they compete on an equal footing with those who are not enrolled.

Work Plan: The selected candidate will work on the development of a high resilience electric microgrid for critical applications. The work plan comprises the following tasks:

1. System Architecture Design and Control

This task is focused on the planning of the microgrid architecture and designing its control methodology.

2. Implementation of a functional Microgrid

The objective of this task is to achieve a fully operational microgrid installation with distributed generation, an energy storage system, vehicle-to-grid integration and load controllers.

3. Microgrid Control Optimization

In this task control strategies will be developed to optimize the microgrid operation focusing on resiliency, economic and environmental impacts.

4. Microgrid Assessment under Critical and Disaster operation and Experimental Validation

This task will be focused on testing the developed microgrid and control algorithms, namely during critical and disaster situations. Several types of faults will be simulated and the microgrid response will be analysed. The microgrid installations at DEEC-UC will be used to conduct preliminary tests.

Regime: The attribution of the fellowship does not generate or entitle a relation of a legal-labour nature, and the fellowship is undertaken in an exclusive dedication regime. The fellowship holder is awarded the Fellowship Statute of the ISR-UC, in its current wording, according to the Research Fellowship Holder Statute, and according to the Regulation for Research Fellowships of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P., both in their current wording.

Location: Instituto de Sistemas e Robótica - Universidade de Coimbra (ISR-UC)

Duration: 6 months.

Renewal: Possibly renewable, by agreement between both parties, not being allowed to exceed the project’s deadline.

Scientific orientation: Professor Doutor António Paulo Coimbra.

Financial conditions: The amount of the fellowship is € 1.144,64 corresponding to the monthly compensation stipulated in the FCT table (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.en), plus social security (Seguro Social Voluntário, first level contributions) and personal accidents insurance.

Selection methods: The selection methods to be used will be the following: curricular evaluation, with a valuation of 50% for academic qualifications and 50% for the degree of satisfaction of the requirements relating to knowledge and experience for the project. If the Jury deems it necessary, an interview may be carried out with the candidates placed in the first three positions according to the ranking resulting from the above criteria. In this case, the final score will include the curricular assessment (as described above), with a valuation of 80%, and the interview, with a valuation of 20%. If none of the candidates has the appropriate profile (overall assessment below 60%), the scholarship will not be awarded.

Jury responsible for selection: President António Paulo Coimbra; Jury Members: Aníbal Traça de Almeida, Pedro Manuel Soares Moura.

Formalization of application: Applications must be formalized by sending the following elements:

(1) Letter of motivation;

(2) Curriculum Vitae (CV); The CV should include: (i) Contact; (ii) Academic qualifications, including a complete list of the concluded courses/subjects/curricular units and their classifications); (iii) List of scientific publications; (iv) Projects in which he/she has participated; (v) Other relevant information;

(3) Copy of the Certificate of Qualifications with the final average.

(4) Proof of enrollment in a doctoral/PhD course, or in a course not conferring an academic degree integrated in the educational project of a Portuguese higher education institution, or a declaration on the honor by the candidate that he/she will enroll in the course until the date that eventually may be defined by ISR-UC (date equal or previous to the date of contract signature, a date that may exist in case a fellowship is granted);

Applicants with academic degrees obtained abroad will be required to present a Certificate of Recognition in accordance with applicable law. This document is mandatory only in the contractualization phase.

Applications submission: Applications must be sent by e-mail, with reference ResiMicrogrid/BI/02 in the subject, to acoimbra@deec.uc.pt with cc to lara@isr.uc.pt.

Submission of applications: Between 27th July to 10th August, 2022.

Form of publicity / notification of the results: The results of the evaluation will be publicized, through a list ordered by the final grade obtained, with the candidates being notified by email. After the dissemination of the results through e-mail, the candidates must consider themselves, from the outset, notified to, if they wish, express themselves in a prior hearing within a maximum period of 10 working days after that date. At the end of this period, the selected candidate must consider himself summoned to start the fellowship.
