Project Summary:

Coastal zones today face a challenging global future. The communities coastal areas have been growing and are expected to focus and expand further throughout this century. The rise in sea level (SNM) will lead to more phenomena of ocean overtopping and flooding of coastal areas. So, in a scenario maintenance of the current mitigation and adaptation measures, a increased exposure and vulnerability of coastal communities to NMS. On the other hand, future coastal planning initiatives will have the desired practice if they focus on the local scale to ensure the adaptation of global and national frameworks and strategies and the full implementation of mitigation and adaptation to SNM. The Portuguese coastal zone has problems similar, despite 30 years of restrictive and complex measures of coastal spatial planning and risk and disaster prevention. Modeling the SNM at a global level has allowed a better understanding understanding of how coastal processes can affect areas in the future coastal interiors and what will be the global consequences of the flood permanent access to coastal areas. However, there is still a deficit of knowledge resulting from the application of these models at the local level and from the risk mapping for the Portuguese coast, including the projection of exposures and vulnerabilities and response capacities at a sub-municipal level and up to the end of the century. The HighWaters project aims to build a roadmap for adapting to SNM having into account strategies for land use planning in the medium and long term with  based on the municipal risk profile for Mainland Portugal. The scenarios include the reference periods of 2040, 2070 and 2100.
