A Call for one master thesis fellowship (Bolsa de Investigação) is open Fundação D.Anna de Sommer Champalimaud e Dr.Carlos Montez Champalimaud (Champalimaud Foundation) in the context of the project ” Comparing pediatric and adult cancer progression and therapy response" ” PTDC/MED-ONC/5553/2020” - financed by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT)



The Fellowship will have the duration of 12 months and is expected to start in 1st September 2022 , in exclusiveness regime, as regulated by Lei n.º 40/2004, de 18 de Agosto, FCT (Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação Científica) and the FCT Research Fellowship Regulations (www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/docs/RegulamentoBolsasFCT2015.pdf), as well as the Fellowship Regulations of the Champalimaud Foundation.

Monthly Stipend: tart at 875,98€ as determined by FCT, I.P. Scientific Fellowships regulations for Portugal (www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores) and the Fellowship Regulations of the Champalimaud Foundation.

The fellowship will be paid monthly by bank transfer. The fellowship holder will have personal accident insurance and, if not covered by any social protection scheme, can ensure the right to social security through adherence to the voluntary social insurance scheme.

Eligibility criteria

Selecting Criteria: Any national, foreign and stateless candidate(s) holding a degree in biological sciences, medicine, veterinary or engineering, with a demonstrated ability for independent and creative research. Experience in any of the following areas will be beneficial to the application: cell culture, immunostainings and biological imaging techniques. Good English skills are essential. It is mandatory the candidate should be registered for the master's degree and presents an inscription certificate.

How to apply

  1. Format: Candidates must complete the standard application form and submit a single annexed PDF document containing the application materials stated in the call. Call Ref. "MSc Student Sanchez Apr22".
  2. Applications are also accepted in paper, sent or handed to the HR & Fellows Support Office at the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown, Avenida Brasília, 1400-038 Lisbon, Portugal.

Methods of selection: The candidates’ selection will fully observe all applicable legislation. It will consist in the evaluation of the scientific and curricular backgrounds of the candidates, with particular attention given to the relevance, quality, actuality and adequacy of the aforementioned backgrounds, to be weighed as follows:

  • - motivation letter: 25%
  • - curriculum vitae: 65%

Evaluation scale: Each application shall be evaluated by the jury in a scale from 0% (not adequate) to 90% (excellent), the top 5 students will be interviewed.

Following the interview the top 5 students will be racked as follows: 25% motivation letter, 65% curriculum vitae, 10% interview and the top-ranked candidate selected.

Scientific Orientation: The master student will be supervised by Adriana Sánchez Danés and will join the Cancer and Stem Cell Biology laboratory.

Subject of Activities:

The master student will participate in developing and running in vitro experiments aimed at studying the mechanisms involved in cancer progression and resistance to cancer therapy. This position will include a broad and evolving range of tasks, including:

  • -Generation and engineering of tumour organoids
  • -Functional experiments in vitro
  • -Resistance/response to cancer drugs
  • -Immunostaining & imaging
  • -FACS sorting
