OFFER DESCRIPTION
The NaNoNetworking Center in Catalunya (N3Cat) seeks bright and motivated candidates for the upcoming ERC Starting Grant project called "WINC: Wireless Networks within Next-Generation Computing Systems". The WINC project envisions a revolution in computer architecture enabled by the integration of wireless networks within computing systems. The main hypothesis is that wireless terahertz technology will lead to at least a tenfold improvement in the speed, efficiency, and scalability of both non-quantum and quantum systems. Hence, we are looking for physics engineers, electronics engineers, computer engineers, and computer scientists to work on the project and make such a 10X objective a reality. See the project website for more details.
Technical Scope
N3Cat offers a fully funded Postdoc position for one highly qualified, motivated researcher to work on the area of next-generation computer architecture, leading the development of a new breed of unconventional wireless-enabled processor architectures for classical and quantum computing systems. The candidate applying to this particular offer would be working in one or several of these tasks:
- Development and evaluation of novel computing architectures that fully exploit the benefits of wireless on-chip communication (e.g. low latency, reconfigurability, broadcast).
- Development and evaluation of radically new quantum computing architectures (both in hardware and in software) that fully exploit the benefits of the modular, interconnected, and possibly wireless quatum architecture approach.
- Overview of developments in the integration of wireless, quantum, and classical architecture simulators.
- Mentoring of PhD students of the project.
- Writing of grant applications as PI with freedom to develop own ideas.
Work environment and benefits
The position is fully funded for 1 year, which can be extended to 2 years if the extension conditions are met. The candidate will work within a team of 10-15 members (PI + 1/2 postdoc + 5/7 PhD students + 5/7 undergrads) and help in the management of the group. Moreover, the candidate will work in cooperation with other researchers from project partner universities from the US, Germany, or Greece, to name a few.
The following list is part of the employment package:
- Competitive salary for a postdoc researcher in Spain.
- Thirty (30) natural days of holidays plus standard bank holidays (all paid)
- Healthcare benefits (social security) throughout the grant. You will get standard Spanish healthcare benefits which are equivalent to the healthcare provided to Spanish citizens. Public healthcare in Spain is considered among the best in the world.
- Travel allowance, if coming from abroad: one-way flight tickets from your location to Barcelona.
- Accommodation, if coming from abroad: 1 natural month at the UPC dorms, specifically at the UPC Campus Residencia Torre Girona.
- Paid trips to conferences to present your work (based on publications, one or more expected per year).
- Paid short visits to international collaborators (around one month, once per year)
- Desktop computer to work on campus.
- Laptop computer to work outside campus.
- Personal and research group bonuses will be established once recruitment of the entire team is finalized.
Candidate Profile
We welcome doctors in areas related to Computer Science and Computer Architecture Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications background is also appreciated. Experts in quantum computing will be valued very positively. We expect candidates with excellent publication and service record, willing to lead and develop their own career as PI. We are particularly seeking individuals:
- Highly motivated and self-sufficient,
- With attention to detail,
- Experienced in student supervision and academic service,
- With good grant management and writing skills,
- Excellent technical skills in communications and networking, with good background in electromagnetics
- Proficient in English (both oral and written). The candidate will participate in research papers, international conferences, and project meetings and is thus expected to have strong communication skills in all those environments.
Interested candidates can send his/her CV to Sergi Abadal (abadal@ac.upc.edu).
