OFFER DESCRIPTION

Post-Doctoral Researcher in Rehabilitation Engineering and Digital Health Technologies

The Rehabilitation Engineering Laboratory (RELab) at ETH Zürich is part of the Department of Health Sciences and Technology. The RELab is an interdisciplinary group with competencies in mechanical and electrical engineering, movement science, neurorehabilitation and neuroscience. We apply robotics, wearable sensor technologies and non-invasive neuroimaging to explore, assess and restore sensorimotor function. Our goal is to promote sensorimotor recovery following neurological injury and to develop assistive technologies to compensate for remaining deficits.

To support our ongoing research projects and strengthen our position as a leading research group in the field of digital health metrics for the assessment of sensorimotor function in neurological patients, we are looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher with experience in human movement data collection and analysis (kinematic, kinetic, physiological signals), data mining and machine learning approach, (bio)statistical analysis as well as computational modelling.

Project background

Clinical assessments have the potential to provide valuable insights into the effect of different therapeutic approaches. However, they are time-consuming to administer and suffer from several limitations, such as subjectivity, flooring/ceiling effects and poor sensitivity. This line of research aims to provide clinicians and therapists with objective and sensitive tools to precisely quantify impairments, both motor and somatosensory, in the clinic as well as in the home environment.

In the last few years, we have developed technology-based assessments such as the Virtual Peg Insertion Test or the ETH MIKE that provide sensitive and reliable digital health metrics based on kinematic and kinetic data to characterize upper-limb sensorimotor function. Data from over 500 neurological patients have been collected with these devices, and several clinical studies are currently ongoing. As a Postdoctoral Researcher, your goal will be to spearhead this research line and coordinate the data collection and data analysis of these different studies. Particular interests will be on exploring the use of digital health metrics to:

  • better characterize sensorimotor impairments in different neurological populations
  • explore new ways to evaluate and document changes over rehabilitative interventions, and
  • define statistical models to predict intervention outcomes or identify responders to specific rehabilitation treatments

Job description

  • Data analysis and development of new algorithms/models to evaluate sensorimotor function in neurological patients based on digital health metrics – review existing approaches and develop new methodologies (e.g., prediction models based on machine learning approaches)
  • Management and planning of clinical trials, coordination of resources and participation to the supervision of Research Staff in the assessment line of research of the RELab
  • Supervision of data collection with the assessment technologies and data integrity. Strong collaboration with clinical research partners
  • Implementation of testing protocols and ethics applications
  • Actively contribute to grant writing and preparation of scientific publications

We offer

  • A unique and stimulating work environment within a leading research group in the field of technology-based assessments
  • Existing assessment technologies, already ongoing clinical studies, and large datasets that will be made available
  • Extensive network of clinical collaborators guaranteeing access to quality data
  • Competitive salary according to ETH standards for Postdoctoral Researchers

Your profile

  • Doctoral degree and strong track record in human movement analysis, applied data science, neuroscience/neurorehabilitation, or other fields directly related to the application of digital health technologies for assessment of sensorimotor impairments in neurological patients
  • Advanced knowledge in (bio)statistical analysis, machine learning and modelling applied to biomedical/neurorehabilitation fields. Knowledge in the use of robotics, sensor-based technologies (e.g., IMU) and motion tracking is an advantage
  • Interdisciplinary expertise involving data collection and analysis, and coordination of clinical trials
  • Experience in collaboration with clinicians and patients, and interest in closely collaborating with these partners
  • Outstanding publication record in the field of human movement data analysis, data science, computational modelling, or neurorehabilitation/neuroscience
  • Excellent management skills and experience with supervising students
