OFFER DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a phage enthusiast to join the team of Dr Evelien Adriaenssens as a Research Scientist at the Quadram Institute Bioscience (QIB), based in Norwich, UK.

Background:

PhageLand is a large project funded by the Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance with partners in Spain, Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands and Moldova, which aims to develop a novel intervention strategy combining bacteriophages and constructed wetland technology to prevent the spread of antibiotic resistance from wastewater into surface water.

The role:

As part of the consortium, the jobholder will be responsible for discovery and characterisation of phages for ESKAPE pathogens, the production of stocks and with other partners contribute to the bioinformatic analysis and evaluation of phage-treated constructed wetlands using metagenomics and viromics. The jobholder will collaborate with all partners and travel to project meetings where necessary.

The ideal candidate:

The ideal candidate will hold a PhD in Microbiology, Biotechnology, Bioscience Engineering or a related Life Science subject, and will be passionate about using phage technologies to combat antimicrobial resistance. The responsibilities consist of a 50/50 split between wet lab and dry lab work, with the bioinformatics aspects supported by a staff bioinformatician. Therefore, applicants with experience in either wet or dry lab work and the willingness to learn about the other aspect will be considered. Good communication skills are essential, as is the ability to work independently.

We recognise that pandemic restrictions have limited opportunities for research. Candidates are encouraged to apply even if they don't meet all criteria and provide clarification in the cover letter.

Additional information:

Salary on appointment will be within the range £32,578 to £39,938 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This is a full-time post for a contract of 30 months.
