OFFER DESCRIPTION

UiT The Arctic University of Norway has established «The Arctic MSCA-PF program» (uit.no/project/arcticmsca) to recruit excellent young researchers planning to apply for a Marie Skƚodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (MSCA-PF) to pursue a career in research. We invite applications from promising young researchers within the field of Cognitive Developmental Psychology. The selected candidate will write a proposal for a 24-month MSCA-PF at UiT together with Dr. Mikolaj Hernik. This is an opportunity to accelerate your research career while living in the urban research city of Tromsø, uniquely located at the top of the world surrounded by some of Europe’s last pristine wild nature.

This call is one of 55 from pre-selected supervisors at UiT The Arctic University of Norway through the “Arctic MSCA-PF program” (uit.no/project/arcticmsca/list-of-participants). Successful postdoc candidates will be invited to Tromsø (travel and accommodation expenses covered) for a three-day MSCA-PF symposium June 8-10, 2022 (if pandemic allows). At this event, the candidates will present their past research achievements, discuss future plans with their potential supervisor and learn how to write a successful MSCA-PF application. The selected candidates will, jointly with the supervisor, write the MSCA-PF application by the deadline of September 14, 2022.

In this call we search for talented, young researchers within the field of Cognitive Developmental Psychology as presented by Dr. Hernik:

Human infants from early on in development show remarkable skills in interpreting other agents and their actions. I investigate some of these basic and early emerging social-cognitive skills:

  • Ability to attribute goals to actions of novel non-human agents.
  • Expectation of efficiency in such actions.
  • Learning the functions of novel tools by encoding the goals of tool-using actions.
  • Representing directionality of novel agents in relation to their actions.
  • Sensitivity to basic communicative signals, like gaze-direction, infant directed speech, eye-brow raise.

I am particularly interested in perceptual and cognitive mechanisms that might belong to the evolutionary ancient toolkit supporting responses to agents and actions in cognitive systems across the animal kingdom. I collaborate in studies testing predictions about universality of infant social-cognitive skills across human cultures, and about presence of related skills in non-human animals.

I am looking forward to support a postdoc project related to social perception and cognition in human infants or adults. The prospective postdoc is expected to have a strong background in one of cognitive-science disciplines, good grasp of the experimental method, strong interest in a topic related to my expertise. Prior experience with infant-cognition methods (eye-tracking with EyeLink Pro 1000Plus), statistical analyses, video- and photo-editing software is an asset but not a requirement. Willingness to learn them is essential.

Please send your CV (max 3 pages) and describe a research project that will strengthen and complement the presented research (max 2 pages) to mikolaj.l.hernik@uit.no by Feb 25th 2022. Mark your application "Arctic MSCA".
