A call for tenders is open for one Research Scholarship (BI/01/2022) within the scope of the project ArchNeed – The Architecture of Need: Community Facilities in Portugal 1945-1985, reference PTDC/ART-DAQ/6510/2020, financed by national funds through FCT / MCTES, the premises of which are included in the synopsis at the end of this announcement. The call is open under the following conditions:

Scientific areas: History; Art History; Architecture; Architectural History, Urbanism.

Type of scholarship: Research Scholarship (BI) for Master´s level.

Amount of monthly maintenance allowance: The amount of the scholarship is € 1104,64, according to the table of scholarships awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (http://fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores ), payments being made monthly, by check or bank transfer.

The project comprises additional and specific budget items to fund fieldwork missions to be carried out in the municipalities included in the fellow’s work plan.

Eligibility criteria

Applicable legislation and regulations: The granting of the Research Scholarship will be carried out upon the signing of a contract between the University of Évora and the scholarship holder, as set in the template at https://www.dinamiacet.iscte-iul.pt/concursos, pursuant to the Research Scholarship Statute (Law No. 40/2004 of 18 August and Decree-Law No. 123/2019 of 28 August) and in accordance with the legislation and Regulation of Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology, IP in force, regulation nº 950/2019 of 16 December 2019, its first amendment (regulation nº 643/2021 of 14 July 2021) and other applicable rules (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento.phtml.pt).


Place of work: The work will be developed at DINÂMIA’CET-Iscte of Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon, including all research missions necessary to the fulfilment of the scholarship contract, under the scientific guidance of Professor Ricardo Costa Agarez, the ArchNeed project’s PI.


Duration of the scholarship: The scholarship will have a duration of 24 months, starting in April 2022. The scholarship contract may be renewed until the end of the project's budget execution.


Selection process

Application deadline and submission of applications: The tender is open from 1 February to 14 February 2022.

Application material: Applications should be submitted by email to DINÂMIA’CET at concursos.dinamiacet@iscte-iul.pt, a/c Prof. Ricardo Costa Agarez, including in subject the ref. BI_01_22_Name of candidate, and must include the following documents (PDF format):

  1. Presentation and motivation letter, duly signed, indicating the reference of the project in subject (PTDC/ART-DAQ/6510/2020) and stating the doctoral programme or course not leading to an academic degree in which the candidate is enrolled, how adequate and relevant his/her profile is to the premises of the call and position, his/her most relevant skills to advance the project and the candidate’s foremost contribution to it;
  2. A detailed CV;
  3. Copy of an identification document;
  4. Copy/es of qualification certificate/s;
  5. Copy of proof of enrolment;
  6. Other documents considered relevant for the application.

For the purposes of application, the evidence may be replaced by a declaration of honour signed by the candidate, but the failure to demonstrate, in the contracting phase, the possession of the required degree on the deadline for application or the non-presentation of proof of enrolment in the study cycle or non-degree course, will result in the cancellation of the candidate's application.

Academic degrees obtained in foreign countries require registration by a Portuguese Institution in accordance with Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of August 16 and Ordinance No. 33/2019, of January 25th.

Additional comments

Advertising/notification of results: The final results of the evaluation will be publicized, through a list of admitted and excluded candidates and a list of final classification, and all candidates will be notified by writing through email. Candidates will have a period of 10 working days, following the communication of results, to express their opinion in a preliminary hearing of interested parties.

The scholarship will be offered to candidates holding a master’s degree who are currently enrolled in a doctoral studies programme or in a course not leading to an academic degree. Candidates should have: a master’s degree in History, Art History, Architecture, Architectural History, Urban Design or similar, with a final mark of 14 (in 20) or higher (mandatory requirement);

Specific Requirements

Advanced command of the Portuguese language, spoken and written (mandatory requirement) and of the English language, spoken and written (preference requirement); Research, writing and publication work record on the history of built environment production processes, including buildings, urban ensembles and sectors and infrastructure, and/or of their public and private promoters, employing history sources, or on the administrative and institutional history, in Portugal (preference requirement); Work experience on the archives, organised or not, of public and private entities, and particularly experience on working with, recording and researching text, image and drawn records, on the commission, conception, support, funding, construction, refurbishment and fitting of buildings, urban ensembles and sectors and infrastructure in Portugal (preference requirement); Experience with databases and information systems (preference requirement).
