The research project “A network science approach to social cohesion in European societies” (PATCHWORK), funded by the European Research Council (ERC Advanced Grant awarded to Dr. Miranda Lubbers), is hiring a post-doctoral researcher for a period of four years at the newly founded Laboratory for Computational Analysis of Egonetworks, Social Cohesion and Exclusion (COALESCE Lab) at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology of the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

The successful applicant will work within the international, interdisciplinary project team. His/her work will consist in simulating scaled-down societal networks based on the project’s novel, representative individual acquaintanceship network data for six countries and modeling network influence on cohesive attitudes such as solidarity and social trust using agent-based models, based on theory and calibrated with the project data. This will result in at least three international publications in high-impact academic journals, and will contribute to the objectives of the research project.

The appointment will initially be for 1 year. After satisfactory evaluation of the initial appointment, it will be extended to another 3 years.

The candidate is expected to start in May 2022 (if another starting date is preferred, please state this date in the letter). The job location is in UAB-Bellaterra (Barcelona). The candidate will be expected to be work at the UAB office to collaborate with other members of the team.

The candidate will become a member of the COALESCE Lab directed by Dr. Miranda Lubbers.

The Project

As European societies are becoming increasingly unequal, diverse, and polarized, concerns about their cohesion are growing. In this light, it is surprising that social cohesion research has almost entirely ignored one of its core dimensions: relationships. Broad acquaintanceship networks, which connect each individual to hundreds of others through both intimate and superficial relationships, have long been assumed to bind societies together and provide a sense of community and solidarity. Nonetheless, they have hardly been studied empirically due to the technical complexity of the comprehensive study of society-wide networks. This project will develop a ground-breaking, network-scientific approach to social cohesion. After designing a theoretical framework for the structural cohesion of societies, it develops a new methodology to study structural cohesion empirically, hybridizing two strands of network research in an unprecedented way. The methodology will be implemented in a large-scale, cross-national European survey administered to representative samples of the populations of five countries. The survey estimates and country-level statistics are used to simulate (scaled-down) society-wide networks, to explore resulting macro-level structures. These macro-level structures are then used to set up agent-based models to study in more depth how broad acquaintanceship networks influence subjective manifestations of cohesion, which can be calibrated on survey data. Furthermore, qualitative research will study the temporal and cognitive processes and perceptions that shape subjective manifestations of cohesion against the backdrop of the individual acquaintanceship networks. For the first time, we will know how cohesive broad acquaintanceship networks are across categorical fault lines of citizenship, social class, religion, and political orientation for five societies, how real-life inter- and intra-group relationships cluster to form network constellations that expose individuals in unique ways to other social groups, and how these constellations shape subjective manifestations of cohesion such as tolerance, trust, and acceptance of diversity

Functions

The postdoctoral researcher will work within the PATCHWORK research project, under the direction of Dr. Miranda Lubbers, on the simulation of societal networks based on novel, representative acquaintanceship network data from a cross-national survey, and agent-based modeling of the influence of these networks on cohesive attitudes (based on theory and calibrated on project data). (S)he will have the following responsibilities: − Conducting research: literature review, data preparation, design and implementation of simulation models and the models of influence processes, calibration of the models on the project data, statistical analysis and reporting of results;

− Presenting results at national and international scientific conferences and in at least three articles in high-quality, international scientific journals;

− Contribution to the daily supervision of a PhD student who will also work on agent-based modeling and simulation;

− Work in collaboration with Dr. Miranda Lubbers; active participation in the research group of the PATCHWORK project in collaboration with the other project members,

including PhD students and Postdocs to be appointed; active participation in the COALESCE Lab and regular group meetings;

− All team members contribute to intermediate and final reports and the academic part of the organization of meetings and conferences.

The postdoc will not have teaching obligations, but can potentially participate in a limited amount of teaching if desired by the candidate.

− A Doctorate in (quantitative) sociology, computational social science, network science, or a closely related field with a computational background. If you nearly finished your PhD studies, please state the defense date.

− Advanced programming skills and experience with platforms for agent-based modeling and simulation, and software for data preparation and mathematical modeling (e.g., Java, Netlogo, R)

− Advanced knowledge and skills about Social Network Analysis

− Strong motivation to publish top-quality international articles

− Demonstrable interest in the topics associated with the project

− Excellent academic writing skills

− Excellent command of English (spoken and written). Fluency must be demonstrated in the submitted documents and, for the candidates selected for the third stage, in the interview. Optionally, language certificates can be submitted along with the application. Knowledge of Catalan and Spanish is appreciated but not required.

− Eagerness to work in an interdisciplinary, international environment
