Completion of a doctoral thesis with doctoral training, participation in collective seminars, and co-organization of a workshop.
The « DEMOSION » project aims to improve our understanding of interactions between public and private spheres in Ancient Greece by studying the allocation of responsibilities between public authorities and private actors in the manufacture of weights and coins.
The aim of the doctoral thesis is specifically to retrace the coins and weights’ life-cycle, from their manufacture to the recycling of their metal. A central issue is to clarify the respective roles of public authorities and private entrepreneurs (mine-leases, argyrokopoi, engravers) in the manufacture of those instruments. Another important question is about the control of weights and coins, including the interpretation of marks, monograms and symbols on those instrumenta, as well as the study of the regulations and penalties pertaining to frauds.
