DESCRIPTION OF RECRUITMENT INSTITUTION

 SENERGY PRODUCT AND SERVICES (SENERGY) is a Spin-off of the University of Extremadura (UEX) with the objective of transferring the knowledge acquired for Power Electric and Electronic Systems Research and Development Group (PE&ES) of the Electric, Electronics and Automation Engineering Department.

The University of Extremadura (UEX) was created in 1973 and it has been continuously growing with 40 departments, around 1793 researchers and profesors and about 21866 students (A.A. 2018/2019). It is organized in a multi-campus structure with 4 campuses (Badajoz, Cáceres, Plasencia and Mérida). With regard to the international reputation, the UEX stands in the 867th position world in CWUR. Electronics and Automation Engineering Department of the UEX consists of around 47 scientists, whose research and education activities cover power electronics, electrical engineering, electrical and electronics measurements, automation, electromagnetic fields, telecommunications…

Power Electric and Electronic Systems Research and Development Group (PE&ES) is a Research, Development and innovation (R+D+i) group within the Electric, Electronics and Automation Engineering Department of the UEX that has been working since 2000 in public and private projects related with renewable energies, power quality, energy storage and electric mobility, from both points of view power electric and electronic systems. PE&ES has carried out more than 20 projects and has publish more than 200 publications in journals, conferences, books…

SENERGY was born in 2015 in order to focus the PE&ES know-how to the research and development solutions in the energy sector together with information and communication technologies (ICT). Currently it is composed of 6 members, 1 of whom is PhD. As a Spin-Off of the UEX, SENERGY facility is located in the campus of the university of Badajoz and has the support of the PE&ES research group and the UEX themselves. In the first years of the company's life, SENERGY aims to develop its own solutions in the intelligent energy sector, closely linked to sources of renewable generation, energy storage and sustainable mobility. The activities of SENERGY have been oriented from the beginning to face the challenge of safe, efficient and clean energy that allows to face the energy future in a sustainable, efficient way and promoting new productive systems that offer society new development opportunities. Currently, the company concentrates its know-how in the operation and maintenance of photovoltaic plants with multi-brand inverter repair service, monitoring services with its own platform for different sectors, energy consulting, electric mobility chargers installation and maintenance, and research and development projects.

In terms of company certifications, SENERGY was certified as an Innovate SME since 2018 for the “Ministerio de Economia, Industria y Competitividad” in Spain and also Technology-Based Company recognized by The National Association of European Business and Innovation Centers.

On the research and development projects, SENERGY has carried out two regional projects (2018 and 2019) focus on R&D and training financed by Government of Extremadura under innovation and talent program with the objective of incorporating new graduates to companies. They were related to design and development of smart power energy converters prototypes that integrates photovoltaics energy sources, battery storage systems and grid connection in order to improve the electrical efficiency of different applications, such as grid connected houses and isolated and distributed zones. The projects are related to the development of smart power converters prototypes with the aim of providing solutions for renewable energy management and smart grids. The topology usually contains DC/DC converters and AC/DC converters and a control board for measures, drivers gating and communications. The prototypes nominal power to date are from 3kW to 300kW. In general, SENERGY is focused in developing products and systems for controlling the Electrical Energy, covering applications as Electrical Energy Generation by using Renewable Energies, Energy Storage, Energy Monitoring, Energy Management, Demand Response Control or Electric Transport.

On the European side, SENERGY is becoming an active part in the latest Horizon 2020 European Union calls for developing innovative projects related to power electronics.

 DESCRIPTION OF RESEARCH GROUP AND TOPIC

 SMARTGYsum (SMART Green energY Systems and bUsiness Models) project groups together leading European Universities and Institutions (the consortium is composed by 13 universities and 14 companies/institutions) with the aim to implement a multidisciplinary and innovative research and training program, bringing to enable a new generation of Early Stage Researchers (ESR) to foster a New Green Energy Economy in Europe. ESR will acquire the knowledge, methods and skills across a wide range of disciplines around the Energy ecosystem, Renewable Electric Energy Systems and Business Models for the deployment of the Green Energy System. Trained ESR will have the technical and economical knowledge to break the barriers for the deployment of energy transition as market and social barriers (price distortion through externalities, low priority of energy issues, split incentives); financial barriers (investment, high up-front costs, lack of access to capital); information failures (lack of awareness, knowledge and competence); or regulatory barriers (restrictive procurement rules).

SEPS invite applicants for a PhD Fellowship in Green Energy Systems to research in “Cooperative Smart Inverters for Green Generation Plants”.

The research topic will be contextualized in WP2 “Green and Renewable distributed electric energy generation and storing”, being supervised by Dr. Victor Miñambres Marcos and Dr. Enrique Romero Cadaval and co-supervised by Dr. Mariusz Malinowski, and with secondments in Politechnika Warszawska and in TWERD Power Electronics (Poland).

The student will acquire expertise in interdisciplinary fields, gaining through this training program a set of skills that are highly appreciated by semiconductor corporations, providing him/her a valuable expertise background for a future career in the green energy industry.

The ESR will take part in the whole researching process, starting with the proposal of new ideas, going from the design to the experimental validation of prototypes in the laboratory and industry facilities, and finishing with the developing of the business models.

CONTEXTUALIZATION OF POSITION 

 The position is in the frame of a H2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks (ITN) action for Early Stage Researchers within the project SMARTGYsum (Research and Training Network for Smart and Green Energy Systems and Business Models). ESR01 fellow to be recruited in March 2022. The grant covers up to 3 years (contract will be for 1 year with renewing possibility) of full time research according to salary table established in the grant for Spain.

SMARTGYsum project is aimed to train 15 creative and innovative researchers in the field of green energy system and business models. It will incorporate multidisciplinary knowledge, covering Power Electronics, Electric Engineering, Material Sciences, ICT, Data Sciences, Value Chains, Finance and Investments, Management of Energy Markets, Economical and Policy instruments.

The researchers trained in this network will be able to convert state-of-the art knowledge and ideas into new products for economic and social benefit and promoting the energy transition.

As a trained researcher you will have many opportunities to develop an industrial career in any part of the world, but especially in the EU. You will be trained in electric, power electronic and ITC technologies and in business models, and have a secondment in a complimentary training environment as part of your assignments.

 You also will be in a very good position to join R+D departments of Energy Companies and to apply for a postdoc position in any of the top EU academic institutions. You will have a balance knowledge of Technology and Business Models, and a set of relevant scientific publications, a PhD Degree (If possible, a Double PhD Degree, International or Industry mention will be established) and, potentially, International patents.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must satisfy the eligibility conditions for MSCA Early Stage Researchers, i.e., they must have obtained their master’s degree in the past 4 years and must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies) in Spain for more than 12 months in the past 3 years. Applications of candidates not fulfilling these eligibility conditions will not be considered.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ESR

  •  An Initial Research Project (IRP) will be assigned to the ESR at the beginning of the fellowship. The ESR will have the responsibility of executing all the tasks described in the IRP, which will involve research and organization tasks, mobility requirements, milestone accomplishments and deliverable submission.
  • Enroll in the Industrial Engineering Doctoral program at University of Extremadura in Badajoz, Spain, and carry out all the activities required to make a high-quality PhD dissertation within the expected timeframe. Publications in high impact-factor international journals are expected.
  • COVID-19’s outbreak: on-site presence at the recruitment institution will be required if health recommendations authorize it.

Skills/Qualifications

Applicants are required to have an excellent academic background with a master’s degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or any other related discipline, with skills in Energy, Power Electronics or ITC. Applicants who are in the final phase of their master’s degree are also encouraged to apply but have to complete the master before starting the fellowship.
