About the PhD-project "International Management"

The PhD-position is placed within the research group Organizing and Leadership at USN School of Business. Among other topics, the group holds an extensive research portfolio on international management.

The PhD project will focus on the managing of inclusion/exclusion challenges and multicultural hybrid teams (virtual, physical, conceptual space, and solutions) in the context of new patterns of global mobility and forms of global work arrangements within multinational enterprises. Depending on the specific focus of the doctoral research fellow, the project invites for inclusion and integration of different bodies of literature in e.g. Business Ethics; International Business and International Management; International and Strategic Human Resource Management; as well as Expatriate Management. The project may be investigated from various methodological (i.e., qualitative, quantitative, multi- and mixed methods) approaches. The focus of the project may include, but are not limited to, the following areas:

  • Hybrid teams e.g. teams that work both physically and virtually.
  • Focus on positive aspects of online environment in relation to negative biases towards culturally and linguistically dissimilar cultural others.
  • Moving beyond investigating the role of culture solely based on ‘differences’, ‘values’ and distances
  • Intercultural challenges and role of culture in the contexts of hybrid teams.
  • Focus on online support and online HRM systems in relation to international employees and different types of expatriates as well as various forms of global work arrangements.
  • How to manage hybrid teams in the international workplace (e.g. MNEs) where power balance and managerial authority vary across intra-organisational units and levels and countries/regions.
  • The inclusion of minority group members by use of virtual means e.g. how specific groups deal with the virtual environment and how they are integrated and involved in relation to task collaboration and the social environment.
  • New understanding of the relationships and boundaries between virtual, online and physical space.
