In cooperation between the University of Klagenfurt and JOANNEUM RESEARCH ROBOTICS the following position is available:
PhD position "Simulation of automotive radar systems".
The position is jointly advertised by the Institute for Intelligent System Technologies, Faculty of Technical Sciences, Chair of Sensors and Actuators (Professor Hubert Zangl) at the University of Klagenfurt and the Institute ROBOTICS (Professor Michael Hofbaur) at JOANNEUM RESEARCH. The minimum monthly gross salary for this position (full employment, Uni-KV: B 1) is € 2,971.50 (14 x per year). The contract is project-related and limited to 3 years.
The PhD project focuses on the generation of real-time capable simulations of millimetre-wave radar sensors for automotive applications (keyword autonomous driving) as well as the associated experimental, metrological validation of the developed simulation models, in laboratory setups and in the subsequent use of corresponding environments (e.g.: parking garages). For this purpose, the work builds on the existing radar simulation framework ViRa (vira.aau.at) of the Institute for Intelligent System Technologies and extends it for the automotive application domain. Embedded in an international research project with renowned national and international industrial and scientific partners, physical and simulation-based experiments are thus combined to create new opportunities for research and development in the field of autonomous driving.

The Faculty of Technical Sciences at the University of Klagenfurt was founded in 2007 and houses the three departments of Information and Communication Technology, Computer Science and Mathematics. REQUIRED EDUCATION LEVELEngineering: Master Degree or equivalent
- Excellent academic record
- Programming skills in common high-level languages (C++, Python) and mathematical software (MATLAB) as well as software engineering expertise to contribute to a large code base.
- Experience and/or interest in digital signal processing, e.g. for radar sensors.
- Prior knowledge of multiphysics modeling and simulation and/or familiarity with simulation environments such as Gazebo, CoppeliaSim, Unity, etc.
- Master's degree in electrical engineering, information technology, telematics, applied mathematics, or a related field,
- Fluency in written and spoken English,
- High motivation for scientific research in an application-relevant subject area, and willingness to share knowledge in the project team and at the university.
- Independent diligent working style and good communication skills and ability to work in a team,
- Willingness to work with international industrial and academic partners in a collaborative research project.
