CALL FOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

University of Coimbra opens a call for one research fellowship, in the framework of the research project “WUIFireSafer - Safety enhancement and resilience of wildland-urban interface areas against fire” (reference: PCIF/AGT/0062/2018), financed by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P./MCTES, through national funds (PIDDAC), in the following conditions:

Scientific area: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Forest resources, Social Dynamics, Natural and Technological Risks, and others, Geography.

Skills/Qualifications/Admission requirements: Master's Degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Forest resources, Social Dynamics, Natural and Technological Risks, and others, Geography, and enrolled in a PhD degreee course with preference for competences in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and or Geographic Information System (GIS).

Although the recipients must be enrolled in a cycle of studies leading to the attribution of an academic degree, at the time of application it is not necessary for the candidate to have made such an enrollment, and proof of enrollment must be presented until thefellowship is contractualized. Candidates are only required to meet the requirements to enroll in the training offer. If there are candidates already enrolled (including attending a course), they compete on an equal footing with those who are not enrolled.

Work plan/ Objectives: The research activities to be carried out by the scholarship holder, within the scope of the participation of the ISISE research unit in the research project “INTERFACESEGURA – Safety and Fire Resilience of Urban-Forestry Interface Zones”, include historical analysis of forest fires and their impact on urban-forest interface zones, the analysis of heat transfer phenomena that favour the ignition of structures, using advanced computational modeling tools (CFD – FDS – Fire Dynamics Simulator) and/or analysis of risk using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools, namely ArcGIS or QGIS.

More specifically, the Fellow will collaborate with members of the ISISE research team in carrying out part of the tasks in which they are directly involved, such as:

• analysis of resistance and fire reaction of construction products using experimental tests and data provided by manufacturers;

• Numerical modeling using Wildfire Analyst software and its integration with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and/or modeling using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools;

• Reporting and help and participation in all project dissemination activities.

Regime: The attribution of the fellowship does not generate or entitle a relation of a legal-labour nature, and the fellowship is undertaken in an exclusive dedication regime. The fellowship holder is awarded the Fellowship Statute of the UC, in its current wording, according to the Research Fellowship Holder Statute , and according to the Regulation for Research Fellowships of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P., both in their current wording.
