The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a non-profit research and educational institution with a strong scientific and technological orientation, emphasizing international collaborations, cross-disciplinary research, innovation, and postgraduate education. CyI, through its established research centers, addresses challenging issues that are important at both the regional and international levels. Many of its research activities are being carried out in partnership with leading institutions in the respective thematic areas.
The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a Research Assistant in Archaeometallurgy. The selected candidate will support the A.G. Leventis Chair in Archaeological Sciences in the development of archaeometallurgy at STARC.
Specifically, the RA will support the Chair in the setting up of a functioning internal research infrastructure (electronic and physical library, sample archive) for archaeometallurgy, in the analysis and documentation of archaeometallurgical finds, and in the preparation of internal reports and various publications (journal articles, book chapters, and web-based media) as needed.
The appointment will be on a full time basis, initially for a period of one year, with the potential of renewal depending on performance and availability of funds.
Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:
- Populating an internal PDF library of archaeometallurgical literature using Zotero, including scanning of books and allocating keywords;
- Preparing polished blocks of archaeometallurgical finds, such as slags, ores and ceramics;
- Taking optical and potentially electron micrographs of such samples;
- Documenting the existing library of polished samples within a finds database;
- Organizing and documenting the collection of archaeometallurgical study material at STARC; and
- Assisting with general work in preparing reports and publications as needed.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science or similar in Cultural Heritage / Heritage Science / Archaeological Science / Earth or Materials Science, or cognate fields
- Background in archaeometallurgy
- Experience in laboratory work, incl. instrumental analysis of metals and slags
- Experience with Microsoft Excel
- Experience in sample preparation
- Fluency in academic English (oral and written)
- High level of communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to adopt to a multicultural/multinational environment
Specific Requirements
Preferred qualifications and skills
- Additional European languages (e.g., Italian, French, German, Spanish, Greek) are an advantage for the processing of published works in the Zotero library
- Experience in optical and / or electron microscopy is an advantage
- A thesis (Bachelor or Master’s) in archaeometallurgy is an advantage
- An MSc in one of the relevant fields is an advantage
