The Laboratory of instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics (LIP) is opening a selection tender for one vacancy for doctorate – Assistant Researcher - to perform research in the scientific area of Particle, Hadronic and Nuclear Physics, in the framework of the NPSTRONG group at LIP.

The candidate will be hired under a non-fixed term work contract, pursuant to the dispositions of articles 6( 1) b)) and 7 of the Decree-Law no. 57/2016 of 29th August, updated by the Law nº 57/2017, of 19th July and to the Labour Code, under its current reading.

The candidate will develop research activities, including coordination, on applications of non-perturbative QCD methods to multiquark systems, for a quantitative and unified description of clustering phenomena, structure of baryons and mesons, short-range correlations and nuclear interaction from first principles of QCD.

The candidate must have adequate features to integrate international and diverse teams, in a constructive and collaborative environment.

The candidate must have a PhD in Particle, Hadronic and Nuclear Physics, have large experience in spectroscopy and hadron structure research, and demonstrate scientific leadership skills in his/her post-doctoral career, as well as experience in innovation in the calculation of form factors of hadronic transitions, tetraquark spectroscopy and form factors.

Gross monthly remuneration (before tax and social security contributions) is 3.201,40 Euros/month, as defined by article 15 (1) of the Law nº 57/2016 of 29th August updated by the law 57/2017, of 19th July, corresponding to the position of Assistant Researcher.

Eligibility criteria

Any national, foreign, or stateless candidates who hold an academic or professional curriculum whose profile is suited for the activity to be performed can submit their applications.

All candidates who formalize their applications in an improper way or fail to prove the requirements imposed by this tender are excluded from admission. In case of doubt, the panel is entitled to request any candidate to present further documentation supporting his/her statements. False statements provided by the candidates shall be punished by law.

In the event the doctorate degree was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, the degree must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 341/2007 of 12th October by the application deadline.

As stipulated in article 5 of RJEC, the selection is based on the evaluation of the scientific and curricular career of the candidates admissible. The evaluation focuses on the relevance and quality of:

  1. The quality of the Scientific and technical production, in the last 5 years, deemed most relevant by the candidate;
  2. International impact of Research activities, reflected in invited talks, participation in prestigious scientific organizations, prizes;
  3. Research supervision activities, namely finished and ongoing supervision of master's and doctoral students' dissertations;
  4. Knowledge extension and dissemination activities, and service to the scientific community, in the last 5 years.

The five-year period mentioned above can be extended by the panel, if requested by the candidate, whenever the suspension of scientific activities is reasoned by socially protected grounds, like paternity/maternity leave, long-term serious illness, and other legal situations of unavailability to work.

Evaluation criteria are the following:

Evaluation of the CV and motivation letter of the candidates, namely their scientific merit and research capabilities as demonstrated by the diffusion of the scientific results achieved and by the participation in research projects in scientific fields relevant for the proposed work program.

Each member of the panel will value the criteria for each candidate, taking into account the requirements of the duties to be performed, the adequacy of previous experience, his/her relationship to the relevant areas and sub-areas.

The selection will consider the applicant's Curriculum Vitae (60%) and their motivation letter (40%).

High-ranking candidates might be called for an interview, which will then correspond to 100% of the evaluation criteria.

Additional comments

Preliminary Hearing and Final Decision Deadline: Pursuant to article 121 of the Administrative Procedure Code, all candidates have 10 working days to respond upon notification. Panel’s final decisions are pronounced within a period of 90 days from the application deadline.

This tender is exclusively meant to fill the vacancies and can be terminated at any time until approval of final candidate list, and expires with the respective occupation of said vacancies.

The candidate must have a track record of leadership skills and capacity in his/her post-doctoral career. The candidate must have experience in theoretical research on spectroscopy and structure of hadrons and multiquark systems with functional methods based on QCD, and demonstrate knowledge of experimental results and the most recent advances.
