The Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC) has one open Research Fellowship position for Master-holders to work in the project “Coffee protects against NAFLD progression through preservation of intestinal permeability and inhibition of liver fibrosis” (ref. ISIC).
Monthly allowance stipend of 1104,64 Euro in accordance with FCT’s monthly stipend values (www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores), plus Social Security benefits (Seguro Social Voluntário, first level contribution) if requested and personal accidents insurance. This corresponds to an amount covering for a comfortable living in our society. The fellowship payment will be made by bank transfer.
Applications must be formalized, necessarily, by submitting the following documents: Curriculum Vitae in English, motivation letter written in English, two recommendation letters (including respective contacts), copy of Master’s certificate and proof of enrolment in a course relevant for the R&D activities; other documents the candidate may consider relevant to his/her application.
Selection methods: Curricular evaluation (70%) and Interview (30%). At least 2 of the best candidates will be selected for the interview.
Selection and attribution criteria: The curricular evaluation will consider: curriculum vitae (40%) and profile adequacy (60%), namely, proven experience in LC-MS/MS and NMR methodologies and statistical analysis of data outputs. The candidate should be able to perform LC-MS/MS and NMR analysis of urine coffee metabolites. The curriculum vitae of the candidate should be matched by original publications in the scientific field of diabetes and metabolism, with special emphasis on liver disease and prediabetes.
In the interview the selection panel will evaluate the candidates’ knowledge about metabolite analyses and metabonomics, their capacity for critical thinking, their motivation and fluency in English (written and spoken).
The Selection Jury may decide to not select any candidate if they consider no applicant to be suitable for the desired R&D vacancy. If the candidate selected first does not accept the fellowship, the jury has the right to not proceed to hiring the following candidates.
The evaluation results will be announced within 90 days after the end of the applications submission deadline, by notifying the applicants via email. After the announcement of the results, candidates are considered automatically notified to, if they wish to do so, comment on the results on a preliminary hearing period within 10 days after that date. After this, the selected candidates will have to declare in writing their acceptance. Unless a justification worthy of consideration is presented, if the declaration is not submitted within the referred period, it is considered that the candidate waivers the grant.

Candidates must hold a Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Life and Health Sciences or related fields. Candidates are also expected to possess excellent command of written and spoken English.
The successful candidate will actively contribute to the development of the project by performing analyses of human urine samples for coffee metabolites in subjects with different degrees of non-alcoholic liver disease (NAFLD) and will also be trained in integrating the analyses of these data with other clinical measurements.
